Is this suitable for very straight, fine hair? Pomades typically drag my hair down and make it lifeless.

Yes, it holds really well. It's very strong. If you are worried about not getting volume also use the powder that mister pompadour makes. That's what I do. I blow dry my hair, use the powder, then put this through my hair. It give it a nice natural look, and adds volume to my relatively flat hair.

How does this handle getting your hair wet with product applied, say after a good amusement park water ride, or dip in the ocean? Does it repel water?

I haven't completely submerged myself in water with this product but from my experience in adding water to my hair after it's been applied, your hair will get heavier and lose the style/shape you began with. This product does well with a slight damp (directly out of the shower) but towel dried hair. The less damp your hair is the easier it is for it to maintain the hold. So in short, you would have to towel dry your hair and restyle it after a good soak.
