A test of the heating capacity prior to the event showed an ability of the hot plate to bring 2 quarts (1/2 gal) of cold water to a boil in 12 minutes. Note that the geometry of the boiling vessel was in part coefficient to this heat absorbtion producing that boiling time. The pot used for the test was a 3 qt All-Clad sauce-pan with a bottom diameter of 8 inches, which centered the liquid column more directly over the heating surface, whereas in the actual-use scenario, a slightly wider and thinner-walled stock pot at 10 inches diameter allowed for a larger volume of unconvected liquid around the perimeter, which resulted in a slightly longer boil time of about 15 min.
