I'm glad I did because, upon pulling the old pulley out, the new one is clearly in better condition and a slightly better design. There are several great videos online that go through exactly how to take apart and put the dryer back together, so it was not difficult, even though there is quite a bit of dismantling involved. The repair took about 90 minutes total, plus time I spent cleaning out the inside of the dryer and replacing tape on the exhaust pipes that had worn and were causing exhaust and lint to get inside and on the heater. (No wonder it often smelled like burnt hair.) The most difficult part was getting the belt in place. The pulley, whether you use what you have or replace it, has a tension spring. The videos I watched seemed to make this step seem simple, but you have to do it with the drum in place and only enough room for one arm to reach under and to the back of the dryer to then hold the pulley under extreme tension and stretch the belt into the right configuration. I am tall, with long arms, and very strong. I am not sure most people could accomplish this part of the task, but for the money you'll save on paying someone else, it is worth a shot. One additional piece of advice: make sure that when you put the drum back in, the side with the pink tape faces the back. Whoever serviced my dryer last put it in backwards.
