On a such a hot day, it was amazing to see them loving it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Buy hessian liner and pond gravel before planting up. *by A***R on 20 May 2026* I received the package in good order. The box wasn't quite big enough & the 'barrel' stretched it a little bit eith lots of sellotape to close the box as the flaps could not meet together. I don't think my barrel was damaged or leaking, but it was raining when I set it up so no tell-tale leakage visible at the time. Seller could do with packing in a sturdier, better fitting box to avoid the splits other customers reported. Couriers are not necessarily known for careful handling in their time-pressured job. Having read others reviews before buying I bought hessian basket liners and pond gravel to top off. I was pleased to find more than enough pond soil was included in my purchase. The plants were packed inside the basket which protected them. 3 of the plants arrived in moist soil in tied plastic bags and looked very healthy. The water lily had bare roots contained in a bag with water in. The leaves were discoloured, and perhaps not so healthy looking. I guess they had been submerged in water which may have caused it. The roots seemed ok and I hope it will recover now planted. Although each plant has its own label it would be useful for less experienced gardeners to have some guidelines on how to plant up to avoid the negative feedback I've read. Many people buy in a hurry and don't have time to read reviews but just look at the overall rating score so a simple planting guideline would help them. Overall I am pleased with my purchase and time will tell on success. I'll post again on that in a few months. The price seems a bit expensive although I've not done a comparison on buying items separately. I guess part of the price is convenience of everything arriving together. I would say hessian and gravel are must-have's and should be included in the package. Perhaps an option of buying one with and without would be good as some people already have these items, and the inexperienced don't get caught out when soil leaks out into the water. I noticed in the reviews many people have added a fountain. I read the water lily info card which said they don't like water movement so maybe this is why many of the lillies have died, although one reviewer said they set theirs to a bubbling effect and the lily seemed happy. I have another pation pond and bought some pond plant nutrient and water treatment balls which have worked well to keep plants fed and water clear, reducing sludge too. I put some of these into this pond and will invest in some oxygenator plants too to give my pond every chance of success. A downside of having still water in mosquitos but I bought some anti-mosquito bits that fliat on top, until the magpies find them. I don't think they are harmful to wildlife. Just checked my pond now it's settled in and it's doing well.
