Yes it will detect metals through wood, although I'm not sure of the distance it would detect through wood compared to dirt.

I can’t get a battery to fit in for doc

Try a different brand type 6F22 also make sure the battery is placed in the right direction. if you look inside the battery compartment you'll see that one hole is bigger then the other and if you look at the battery terminals one is big then the other and make sure they match to each other.
