One end of the Sensor has two conductive elements (poles). When the sensor is oriented so the leads are downwards, the mass rolls onto the poles and shorts them, acting as a throw switch. While not as precise or flexible as a a full accelerometer, roller ball tilt switches can detect motion or orientation simply. Accelerometers, on the other hand, output digital or analog voltage that must then be analyzed with extra circuitry. Each switch worked the same, with two being more intermittent than the other three, in that continuity was more off and on with very little movement when in the closed position, which for these seitches is 180 degrees vertically opposite of the off position. If you point the leads straight up it is off and the closed position is straight down, other angles were very iffy and intermittent on/off. These would not really be a movement switch, rather an upside down indication. I found a bump upwards on the switch would bounce the balls inside an sometimes cause closing of the "contact". Two switches at 90 degrees from each other would be very sensitive to movement. I wanted to experiment with some tilt sensitive wiring of an outdoor device and found these and some sensors with end wiring to use. These 5 Pieces SW-520D Vibration Sensor Metal Ball Tilt Shaking Switch from Dongshan, will work to make a circuit showing tilt and movement to light a led. The seem to work well with a little tilt of the case showing the inside balls making the contact to complete the circuit. This is a take off of the old tilt switches once used on pinball machines where a rod would move over from verticle to contact a ring around it and thusly make the circuit. The use of these little 1" units, counting the wiring, are completely contained and with a bit of silicone sealant and two pieces of shrink fit insulators will make them less likely to ground out. Now if I can come up with a fool proof battery, resistor, spring tension sensor arrangement that allows for changeout and is waterproof, I'm in business.
