Simple to Install.
I had one years ago and switched to all cell phones so didn’t need it anymore. Now I need a hardline for an older family member who can’t operate a mobile. Plugged it in to router and all is well.

Inexpensive landline
I have had one for years...but the last year I moved, misplaced it. You can't beat Magic Jack. Easy to install, and under 50 bucks a year when your computer (at least mine) is on 24/7 is great. I did order a telephone (cordless) but until it arrives, sound is going right through my computer. Plug in, download, sign up for an account, choose a number, add your contacts and you have a CHEAP land line.

Overheats quickly, seriously needs a mini fan; otherwise, I love the very low cost for the service!
I'd rate it less, for its serious overheating issue, but I simply can't find any VoIP service that charges that little! The device has no means of cooling itself off: no fans, screws, nor vents. Biggest issue: the USB connector. I almost burnt my fingers, when I unplugged it, after a phone call, to inspect it. On one magicJack device (I DON'T recommend this), I... • avoided the USB-outlet adapter that came in the box (instead, I plugged it directly into a surge protector that comes with USB connectors preinstalled) • stuck 2 heat sinks (40x25x10mm) onto the magicJack case surfaces (doesn't do much on plastic, but worth a try) • and even carefully drilled tiny holes into it (on the slanted sides, near the top, not where the white sticker is). USB connector was still hot, and the person on the other side, started to hear themselves echo back. For the next one, (I DO recommend this) I... • DIDN'T drill holes into it (in case it's what caused the echo), • DID update the firmware on both the internet modem and the magicJack adapter (plugged it into a computer to update it, which is also how I connected the new device to my account to replace the old one), • DID DISABLE my modem's "SIP ALG" (Session Initiation Protocol Application Layer Gateway) in its settings (said to help with VoIP issues like echoes), • DID add and direct two 40mm 5V fans to blow directly onto the USB connector and case (I set the speed to "Low"), • and DID stick those 50x25x10mm heat sinks onto the new device's top & bottom surfaces. Now it works fine: No echo, no overheating, no cutting off. I even started a conference call with 2 corded phones. I highly recommend that you have like a little fan blowing onto the case and USB connector (my fans are roughly an inch away from the case, and held in place by something to not fall over or move) to avoid overheating. Heat-sinks don't seem to really do much (since they're stuck onto the plastic), so you don't need to really buy them (especially since they may cover up that white sticker with the device's details). My calls used to distort and drop after 20-30 minutes, due to excessive overheating from the device, now I can have hour chats. I even put my hand on the device right after: barely warm. Those devices should come with built-in fans and vents, honestly, but maybe it messes with the call quality. No clue.

MagicJack works very well.
This MagicJack works and way cheaper than my landline was. Now i have caller ID and Call Waiting and could have voicemail which is included. For $23 i kept my old phone number. If i don't recognize the number i don't pick up and i just let the answering machine pick up. On Social Security and every place i can cut costs really helps. Takes a little while to set up-----which i did on my desktop computer. I have it and a phone plugged into my battery backup for the computer and router so i will still have phone service until the battery is run down.

Setup Works on a Home Router WiFi/Ethernet System
Setup worked extremely well for me. I have an phone/answering machine on my land line that comes in over my fiber optic internet service. CenturyLink informed me about a month ago that they would terminate all VOIP phone service in about six weeks (new owner of both services is now AT&T). With the MagicJack modem I was pleased to be able to also integrate a computer interface with my phone service. I plugged the phone machine into the MagicJack, plugged an ethernet cable into the MagicJack and also into my house eternet wall port, then plugged the MagicJack into my desktop computer. The phone worked immediately, the computer software loaded and I updated. MagicJack assigned me a new local number and then I requested to port over my old number for $19.95 plus tax and fees = $23.06 (you have to wait until the MagicJack service is activated before porting the old number). I had to put a credit card on my account for that but I did not elect autorenew after the complimentary 12-month service runs out. MagicJack searched and informed me that my old number was available to port and I was able to put in the request through the computer interface. I had two numbers for two weeks until the porting completed. Until porting is complete, calls on the old number will keep coming in to the phone, however we noticed that all spam calls stopped during this time. This is a huge savings for me and I thank AT&T for terminating their overpriced VOIP service.

NO REFUND FOR 3 YEAR SERVICE CONTRACT even when Majic Jacks says the tech fault was theirs
I was a magic jack user for ten + years. 9/25 I purchased a 3 year service on a new updated version of the device. Had problems ever since with registering online...I can call out but no incoming calls. MJ had me dancing thru hoops ----maybe my phone wasn't matching (brought 3 new ones ), maybe my device was older version, ( purchased 3), (hoop) (hoop) (hoop) maybe my computer had a problem, (hoop) you name it their repair dept suggested it. I asked why not just go into my account and register it since my purchase of renewing for 3 years was quietly being used up and the payment obviously had cleared).... no, that can't be done. Requested a partial refund danced thru three more hoops of new ticket #'s and, always asking " did I get the email?" (hoop) (this took another month + in time) I said no emailed received ... was told to wait another week (hoop). I have 4 numbered tickets from MJ requesting refund. I did get an email for their tech dept stating the fault was on them but I still had to fix it (hoop). Finally, got "THE" email, no wonder, it said no refund was coming (company policy) and suggested I should buy another device and try again. (hoop). The people I talked to, did'nt or could'nt, tell me I was "whistling in the dark for a refund.".... just another way for me to jump thru a (hoop). Meanwhile the MJ device returned to Amazon on 1/9 /26) is still waiting for refund applied to my account (hoop). Seems MJ takes its time ok'ing refunds. Lesson learned: when you read this type of review...pay attention.

Porting old number
Frontier is getting rid of copper. I had to get internet based phone service. The product did exactly as advertised. Porting my current phone number took 3 days, but I think it was frontier taking that long to release my old number. So far, it works great.

Difficult
MagicJack is supposed to be easy to install. This install took four days and several conversations with people protective of cows.

magicJack works great!
Update finally got it to work. Plug it on your network and not directly to laptop worked for me. Then after trying countless times, it finally registered. Once registered the rest worked fine. I ended up trying it on an old Windows 7 laptop and tried on the Edge browser. It worked and I even ported my number in! Now 5/5 stars! Works great, iPhone app is great to receive calls on the go, and saving money! Old review: Hardware is fine so ‘technically’ it works at the very basic level. however, As others have already commented: Registering a phone number is impossible. I wasted hours assuming it would work. Just don’t bother. Customer support is a nightmare and redirects you to their useless website. Nothing works. The site takes on your information but then errors out. Customer service takes your info but refers you to the site. Not sure how they are in business as I can’t pay them. So useless product. Useless company. I really wanted this to work. Tried on windows and mac. I am Techical so I thought something glitched. I’ll try again tomorrow but for now zero stars.
