Bought this for $20 to check for when my cast iron skillet was preheated, and it works great. I've actually been using it a lot more than I thought, just to check the temperature of various objects. It's quite interesting, and pretty fun. It also works to see if your burner has cooled now, and basically any time you need to check the surface temperature of something. Highly recommend this nifty little gadget at this price point.

I use this for making soap. After mixing the lye into the water, and melting the fats/oils, it's important to let them cool to approximately the same temperature before combining. This allows me to easily check the temperature of both mixtures without having to physically insert thermometers into each container. Very handy tool to have, and from what I can tell it seems to be consistent and accurate.

Get one, it will come in handy for cooking, I like to fry fish at 330 degrees in grease, I hate when I drop fish and it sits in under heated grease, I like it to go SWOOSH! This unit helps me get to the right temps for cooking.

it seems to read temperatures very well, if you don't point real far ... like ten feet or more. but ice water is exactly 32 degrees. The ocean water at hollywood beach, fl is 74.8 degrees. internet sez it's 75 deg. i needed to put a good alkaline battery in it in day or two after revieving it though.

This is so useful around the house. You don't even know all of the things that you need to know the temperature of until you have it! We look for drafts (and find them), check the efficiency of our furnace and so much more.

I use this for soap making, the oils and the lye have to be close in temperature using the makes everything easier.
