FROGG TOGGS Boonie Hat – Fishing Hat Offers Waterproof, Breathable, Sun Protection

Nice hat, but maybe not Amazon Prime
If you have ever used the Frogg Toggs rain jackets (the actual full jacket or rain pants, not the cheaper lighter rain suit they sell as a set), this is made of the same material but thinner.I like it. It's very light and like the jackets does great repelling rain. I shared a concern with one of the other reviewers, that it wouldn't vent well in the heat. I'll post an update later after I test it more, but after getting the hat I was pleased that the material was thin so it already feels cooler on my head than my cloth boonie hat. And the best venting hats I've seen feature mesh or open areas on the top, so they wouldn't do well against rain. My existing cloth hat is fine for cool dry weather, but I wanted a hat versatile enough for heat, sun, cold, and rain, and this might be it.I like that there's an adjustable band for tightening the fit on your head, and also a chin strap to keep it fastened under heavy wind. One gripe: Amazon listed this when I bought it as Prime eligible, but I don't think it actually is. I ordered it at the same time as a bunch of other camping gear and most of it came in two days. The hat shipped from a different seller and arrived later. But the seller did pretty well shipping it quickly and it got here just a couple days later. Still, Amazon, you charge a fee for Prime, you should either uphold it or take this item off Prime status.UPDATE (30-May-2016): I took the hat with me on a short hike in 87F and humid weather. It doesn't really breathe much. I also tried to blow through the fabric from the inside of the dome area, and struggled to get any flow. But I'm not changing the rating because I think it's still great; crushable and water repellent, and the chin strap helped a lot with the wind. What I've accepted is that I'll ultimately end up using different hats for different situations; there is no perfect hat for all situations. This one is good for any wet weather and for sun. My old one is fine for cold dry weather. I'll probably need a vented third one for hot dry weather.

Lightweight sun and rain, surprisingly durable
I bought this hat 3.7 years ago. I've used it on many day hikes, camping trips, and a 9 day wilderness canoe trip in Maine. It has done well protecting me from both rain and sun. I used to bring separate sun and rain hats, but now just this one. I also have a fancier sun hat with a raincover tucked in the back brim. I prefer the Toggs because it is lighter and no need to fuss with getting rain cover on and off.I treat the hat fairly rough such as jambing it in cargo pockets and backpacks. I didn't expect the building paper like material to hold up well, but it has!My head is on the larger size, guessing 95th percentile. This hat WAS tight and just barely wearable. The building paper type material does not stretch. However about a year ago, I cut out the inside elastic headband. Fit is now much more comfortable, and as big bonus the hat is cooler in hot weather. Next one I buy, I'll cut out the elastic band on day one.If you wear the chin strap, the hat is pretty good in wind compared to other sun hats I've tried. Brims on other cloth hats tend to flap around much more easily than this one. The brim of the Toggs will move, but it takes a stronger wind and when moved it's more likely to stay in that position rather than flap.

A better hat than I expected !
This hat has a lot going for it. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: It is a superb 'bad' weather hat ! Rain just runs off of it. None is absorbed, so it dries off quickly indoors. The chin strap holds it secure on my head during windy days! No fear of it blowing off my head when walking my dog on gusty, windy, rainy days ! The material ventilates well on hot days despite no air hole vents. I never figured out how it can ventilate so well and not allow water to penetrate it. I did cut out and insert a piece of thin milky white packing foam to insulate the hat in the cold winter. Without it, I can feel the cold winter wind on my head. With the packing foam I can now wear it in winter and remove it for the other three seasons. The wide brim also keeps the sun off of my eyes and face on bright sunny days ! It is a 'one size fits all' type hat that fits comfortably on my head. The chinstrap is necessary only on very windy days.I gave this hat four stars instead of five for cosmetic purposes. I own a lot of hats. It is foldable and packable. Con: If I sit them besides each other it has the most wrinkles. It never quite loses loses all of it's wrinkles. This is why I deducted one star. Conclusion: I am so impressed with this hat that I bought two: one black and one 'stone' color. If I were allowed to own only one hat in my life, this would be it.
