Well, they're not essential for SLRs, but for rangefinder and rangefinder-style cameras (i.e., direct viewfinder) they are the best choice, at least in my opinion. I have them for my Olympus 35SP cameras, had them for the lenses on my X-Pro1 when I had that camera, etc.On the the Fuji X-100F this hood works as well as possible given the size and dimensions of the camera. Yes, it DOES intrude into the optical viewfinder, but that can't be avoided. But the vents allow you to see THROUGH the hood and assess framing. Yes, I know I could use the electronic viewfinder and rear screen, but that's not the way I shoot. As referenced above, I've shot with "real" rangefinder cameras for a long time, including Leica as well as other RFs.
