Rice play with this toy is one of my granddaughters favorite activities! By all means, use water or rice or sand :)

Does anyone know if this might work with small pea gravel?

It would most likely work, but it will probably bounce all over the place as well.

Would this work with kinetic sand?

No, I barely works with regular sand and especially when wet. Overall, not impressed w this toy and mostly used it for water though my toddler quickly lost interest in it
