The Penley brand was acquired in October 2011 by the parent company of Diamond Match as a way to reduce competition for their inferior green match, which is being purchased because of low price, then rejected due to poor performance, but supported by the demands of Wal-Mart. The Penley Strike Anywhere Match is actually superior to the former Diamond red tip!!!

The New Standard (for strike-anywhere match compulsives)
Everyone has their little quirks, and one of mine is a good strike-anywhere match. I used up all of my Diamond strike anywhere matches and tried to buy more, but they were no longer for sale. I found these matches and started with a 3-box order. They work excellently, but I had to modify my striking method by ever-so-slightly changing the pressure I used, and once I acclimated to that, they performed in the excellent range. I THINK (but cannot say for certain) that the match stems are SLIGHTLY thinner than the old Diamond Red Tips, but the lengths are the same and they work so well that I am glad someone's making them. I just rec'd my 36- boxes, so I'm set for a while. I don't know if these matches are still in production or not, so my advice is: get 'em now. Also: a good company to do business with. You can reach them by email and they respond right away, and they ship promptly. The current Diamond Green Tips suck and these are the new standard. FYI, you save $15 by buying them from Amazon as opposed to eBay.

Great product, nice wood sticks.
EXCELLENT product! Much better than the junk you can buy by diamond brand. These aren't as good as what you could buy a decade ago or more but better than the junk on the shelves today in box stores.Only complaint is the wood sticks seem to be treated with a treatment to slow burn down like most modern matches.

Good but not great
I miss the old strike anywhere matches of the 70's and 80's. These matches are good and strike on most rough surfaces but not everywhere I used to be able to with the old ones. These probably are the best of this type you can get. Highly recommend.

These are darn good matches, easy to strike and they burn for over a second. I had one where the white part chipped off the end and it still lit. They seem to burn hotter but I have no proof of that.Love them
