Mary Ellen Millerโs rich visual and scholarly survey of pre-Hispanic art and architecture, including the most recent archaeological finds. Expanded and revised in its sixth edition, The Art of Mesoamerica surveys the artistic achievements of the high pre-Hispanic civilizations of Central AmericaโOlmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, Toltec, and Aztecโas well as those of their lesser-known contemporaries. Providing an in-depth examination of central works, this book guides readers through the most iconic palaces, pyramids, sculptures, and paintings. From the Olmec colossal head 5 recovered from San Lorenzo to the Aztec calendar stone found in Mexico Cityโs Zocalo in 1790, this book reveals the complexity and innovation behind the art and architecture produced in pre-Hispanic civilizations. This new edition incorporates fifty new lavish color images and extensive updates based on the latest research and dozens of recent discoveries, particularly in Maya art, where excavations at Teotihuacan, the largest city of Mesoamerica, and Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztecs, have yielded new sculptures. 242 illustrations, 208 in color Review: Very cool book - I got this for a college class and I was surprised when I actually really enjoyed it. Its got quality work in it and very interesting. Nicely made. Review: HIGH QUALITY - COLOR PHOTOS - INFORMATIVE - I saw some of the reviews said the pics were all black and white, but that may be an older version. This book compacts a lot of great information and color photos and is very easy to reference from one section or another. Great book!

Color or b&w
I have the 4th edition of this really nice book and almost all the illustrations are in color and are very clearly printed. It appears that some people in 2019 got bogus black and white copies and are giving bad reviews. This is unfortunate both for the customers and for the author of the book. UPDATE 12-29-19: I bought the 6th edition despite the negative reviews because I want to make sure I have the latest information and because a local college professor is using the book as a text in her classes. I am happy to report that the illustrations are excellent. The 6th edition has 276 illustrations and 242 are in color. The 4th edition had 220 illustrations and 136 were in color. It's too bad that someone was apparently selling bad copies in the first part of 2019 but the book that I just received in December 2019 is flawless. The price right now is very low on Amazon compared to other sellers, I suppose because of the negative reviews from earlier in the year. Buy now and you won't be disappointed.

A very good introducton into Mesoamerican art and architecture
I was astonished to find out that were are very few writers who are specialized in Mesoamerican culture and Architecture. Mary Ellen Millers is one of the best authors. Her Book keeps the reader interested from the first to the last page. There are enough pictures and illustration to support the text making me want to know more about this fascinating ancient culture. On the downside this book is small. So small that the reader can barely see the details in some of the pictures.
