The SOS program is great in Correctional Settings
I am a Social Worker (LMSW) within the Michigan Department of Corrections mental health program. The MDOC started a new program for the treatment of sex offenders, and in this new program, Self-Help groups are led by inmates. After the first prisoner-run SOS Help for Emotions group, we had so much great feedback about the program that we have decided to run it continuously. In addition, it is the most checked-out book in the Prisoner's Self-Help Library.What is really great is that it focuses on the basic CBT exercises to help with Thinking Reports used to work on Cognitive Disortions. In our Michigan Sex Offender Program (MSOP) groups, the inmates are required to do multiple Thinking Reports a week. For some, this was very challenging, as it is not very concrete. The group SOS and the book SOS are regularly recommended for inmates that struggle with Thinking Reports. The handouts and study sheets are very helpful, and something that the clients can keep.One of the reasons it is liked by the program in general is that it is evidence-based, which is a huge focus for MSOP and one of the reasons that we left the old program behind.The SOS kit further focuses on living a better life in the future, which is what MSOP works on through the Good Lives Model. It is really helpful to have this goal-orientated focus in a world that is always telling inmates to stay away from bad behaviors/situations/people/etc, rather than encouraging them to work toward positive goals and teaching them how to work toward/achieve the goals.The librarian for our self-help library also wrote a review and asked me to post it along with mine: "SOS Help for Emotions Kit has been a positive addition to our self-help library and our self-help groups. The book has helped me open my eyes to how I was thinking and how I can change my thoughts, thus changing my actions. The vidoe's have helped a lot. Easy, painless, humorous, effective tools for contentment!
This is a fun, easy-to-use book! Humorously challenge your belief system (what you expect of yourself and others, whether reasonable or not) and the results will astound you. A great tool to find contentment in your life and your relationships.You will keep this book forever to go back to when those old habits try to sneak back up on you! It is amazing to be able to maintain happiness and tranquility even when the world and people around you do not. Best dollar investment and personal investment you'll ever make.
