They do close around a big fly to trap it. What happens once closed I’m not sure but often a dried out big fly ends up pushed back out to its edge. This is where I assist and remove the dried out fly with tweezers. I have two healthy Venus fly traps. I have repotted both in to larger pots. Sometimes one of the traps will turn black. I use the tweezers to remove. This year I had flowers on long stems. They prefer rain water and drink loads.
