You should keep the padding in so I would maybe recommend getting one size up so you don’t feel restricted with all the padding. I'm a 14 but ordered a 16 because I wanted room for a fleece, but i probably would have been OK with a 14. It has a nice deep inside pocket, ideal for a phone and 2 secure, zip pockets at the front.
