Can the module retain fixed ip configs after power loss? can the module communicate back-to-back without a pc or server interface?

IP settings are retained in internal memory, even after power loss. Yes, 2 modules can communicate back to back via Ethernet cable without pc. I actually used a wireless link utilising Ubiquiti nano stations between the 2 tcp modules. Had no problems once correctly configured.

can the device be used to read modbus data sent by a unit via rs485?

Do you only need to transparently transmit Modbus data, or do you need to convert Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP? If Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP is required, USR-TCP232-410s is recommended.

As long as you are outputting rs232, it *should* work. You need to configure one a a server and the other as a client. I only have a single module rs422 to Ethernet, working as a server and it works fine.
