Review: Great anatomy book! - Atlas of Human Anatomy For the Artist is an excellent book. I found it in a college library and after borrowing it for two weeks, I knew I had to buy my own copy. It is very thorough on the subject of human anatomy and goes into specifics regarding the differences in gender, age, and body mass. I read alot of anatomy books and have not come across too many willing to go beyond the ideal body type. I found it especially helpful that this book provides detailed drawings and photographs of the figure; some books only have rough sketches which are not very helpful. This book is not just for those who want to draw the figure; those who model the figure in 3D applications will also find it useful. Atlas of Human Anatomy For the Artist is not the only anatomy book an artist or animator will need, but it is an excellent addition to their personal library.

A timeless investigation of the human body
A remarkable text for students of anatomy. The text is male-centric but in the context of its author and original publication date this is entirely understandable. In conjunction with the ethnographic section in the rear of the volume, the book may prove useful to Art Historians studying gender and race in Art. The illustrations explain the volume and structure of the human body very well. This book is still relevant half a century after its publication due to the high quality of the illustrations and the text. This book would be useful to artists, anatomists, students of fore mentions subjects, forensic illustrators and investigators, and belaguered students of medicine looking for another way to process anatomical information.

A great reference, but definitely a product of it's time
This book has a lot of very detailed illustrations and descriptions of every bone and muscle you could think of that are great for use as reference. If you already know the basics of figure drawing, this will help you take things to another level by expanding your knowledge of the human form. That being said, this book is dated in some pretty unfortunate ways. For example, most of this book seems to be focused on the male figure. There is some stuff towards the end of the book regarding the female form, and most of the muscles and bones are applicable to men and women, but the lack of variety is a little tiring. Another thing that's weird about this book is the short section towards the end that describes "racial differences" and uses some very out-dated language. It doesn't say anything outright offensive (but definitely incorrect) and actually seems to be pretty respectful, only focusing on the aesthetic differences between different people. That's not to say it isn't inaccurate and borderline offensive, but I'm trying to give the book the benefit of the doubt considering it was published in 1951. Overall, I'd recommend this book, especially for the price. If you need something to keep on your desk as a quick way to reference different details of the human form, this book will do you well. If you're looking to learn more of the technical aspects of figuring drawing, I'd recommend "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" by Andrew Loomis. Ideally you'd want to get both

Best Artist Book
This is the book that I have been looking for. This book shows how the artist needs to understand the shape of things under the skin to best display the outer body. How muscles, bones, fat, the way they move and are connected all come into play when representing the outer body. The only book that I have bought that shows the veins too. Many great examples point out that a part resembles something else, like the shape of a shovel, triangle or ball. Great book for Artist that draw, or sculpt.

Excellent book for practicing anatomical drawing
Thorough explanations on various body parts alongside with detailed and accurate drawing representations. Although there is a collection of technical terms, the book does a good job at not overly complicating the explanations. This book was used as the main textbook for a college level anatomical drawing class, it not only shows separated body parts in different chapters but also demonstrates the basic compositions and ratios of male and female human figures. This will be a highly useful reference book for students, artists, and hobbyists that are interested in anatomical or figurative drawings.

The book itself I have and it is great quality. The kindle version needs to be rescanned and sized appropriately for digital copies to be worth buying.
