This eye-opening picture book introduces readers to their five senses and to synesthesia โa condition in which one sense triggers another. For some people, sounds or tastes have colors. And for others, numbers and letters do. Many famous artists have been synesthetes, including Tori Amos, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, John Mayer, Mozart, and Degas. Imagine that when you hear a bell you see silver or when a dog barks you see red. Thatโs what itโs like for Jillianโwhen she hears sounds she sees colors. At first the kids at school make fun of Jillian. Jillian worries about being different until her music teacher shows her that having synesthesia is an amazing thing. This lively, informative picture book makes synesthesia easy to understand and celebrates each personโs unique way of experiencing the world. Review: Well-written and beautifully illustrated - I purchased this book because I am currently researching synesthesia, and it did not disappoint. This book is well-written and beautifully illustrated, and is just the book one needs to explain synesthesia to children. The illustrations are so beautifully done, I'm sorry I didn't purchase the physical book instead. Some of my favorite lines from the book: "At recess, the children sounded as gold and brown as the leaves on the trees." "The children laughed harder and harder. When she heard their laughter, she saw inky black." "Jillian whispered softly to herself: "I am as sad as a cloud." Review: Informative - Cute little intro to synesthesia

Yes, some people can hear colors
I needed a book about colors for kinders. This is not heavy on plot, but I wanted children to know some people, like my friend, Kris, can hear colors and not just see them.

Not an abnormality but a seventh sense
An engaging explanation-story for little kids of the much misunderstood and not uncommon synesthesia, most often taking the form of the ability to perceive color when a sound is heard---different sound, different color. The illustrator, herself a synesthete, supports the tale with beautiful illustrations.

Beware when ordering.
It was not indicated that this book was used and marked from another library. I would return the book but itโs to much trouble. Very disappointing-I was a childrenโs librarian for many years and this book was top on my list.

It was super nice to see it work out for her
This book helps explain Synesthesia. The Girl Who Heard Colors by Marie Harris, illustrated by Vanessa Newton, touches the surface of what is experienced. Newton has illustrated the colors surrounding Jillian as she goes about her day. It is neat to see how someone else describes the experience. Some people have a little of it, others, a lot. All of them are unique in our own experiences. (Like no snowflake is the same) Being one of the "a lot" people, I can tell you, it can interfer. I was teased a lot because of it too. Not many knew about it because I thought I would be teased more. Jillian discovers she is not weird, she has an extra special sense. It was super nice to see it work out for her. I hope that now more information is out there, syntesthetes are helped early. This is a great start.
