Love this sharpening system. Bought this one for my son-in-law.
This is the best sharpening system I have found. I bought this one for my son-in-law. This kit comes with a stone for sharpening serrated blades instead of the Extra Coarse stone. The system is very easy to use and it’s very easy to put the perfect edge on your knives. The system is set up to sharpen at 4 different angles. 17 degrees for some chef’s knives, 20 degrees for regular kitchen knives, small fixed blade and pocket knives, 25 degrees for larger fixed blade and pocket knives and 30 degrees for heavy duty knives. You can quickly sharpen knives and the system performs well and results are repeatable, unlike using stones and guessing angles. The kit is easy to stow and it’s small enough to keep in a kitchen drawer, tool box or camping gear. You can’t beat the price for the quality of the system and the quality of the sharpness of your knives.

IDEAL SHARPENER FOR KITCHEN AND SHORTER BLADES
This is my second Lansky System. Sadly *someone* dropped my original set on the floor and broke two of the stones. I usually carry several knives. A straight, a utility folder, and a super-alloy folder. Sometimes there are others from the hundreds I own. I'm also an ex-chef and want my kitchen knives "shavin' sharp." This is done always with the Lansky and a Wusthof touchup "steel". The System is dependable and accurate. I sharpen M390, 3V, and plain ol' high carbon, a lot. This system works on them all. Before buying anything I always go to the Amazon 1-star reviews to avoid lemons, etc. Out of habit, I've read the "ones" for this system. Hysterical. A). It scratched the finish on my blade. In 20 years, I don't remember it scratching anything. Tighten the clamp properly. B). Dangerous! The blade slips out of the clamp. See A. C). The angles don't match the blades. Dear Noob: Read up on the "Sharpie Method". You need a cheap jeweler's loupe and a Sharpie. Paint the edge black with the Sharpie. Guess on the correct angle. Take one light stroke with the coarse stone, at the guessed angle. Examine to see if the entire edge has had the black removed. Bang! That's your angle. Write it down for that knife for the next sharpening. D). The clamp is cast junk. My old clamp and the new one are identical in dimensions. The new one appears to be bead-blasted. Whatever it is, so far it works great. E). You can't use the 17-deg setting because the stone bangs into the clamp. You didn't read the directions, did you? I bet you threw out the special screw that came with the set. And I bet you didn't notice that there's a step in the clamp's jaws so that you can grip the blade just by the very back of its spine. Magic! I don't know what to tell ya, 1-star peeps. Thousands of us are cranking out edges that'll pop the hair off your arm, using this kit.

Excellent System, IF you are patient.
I bought the Lansky Professional and added the Sapphire stone, fine Serrated, plus hard & soft Arkansas oil stones. I also purchased the Super-C clamp after reading the reviews. So far I have used it to sharpen every "good" knife in the kitchen from 3" paring knife to 12" carving knife, several in between and both large and medium chef's knives. Additionally I have sharpened everyone of my pocket / belt knives from little mini-pocket knives thru 4" belt knife and multi-tool knife blades too. (Haven't tried the serrated stones yet.) The unit did an EXCELLENT job on every single blade, but it did take awhile, probably 2+ hr to get all 7 kitchen knives done. All have good sharp, clean edges now (they were in bad need of sharpening). I found the sapphire stone maybe a bit of "gilding the lily" but it does put a very clean polished edge as final dressing. I used the hard & soft Arkansas oil stones (and YES like all Arkansas oil stone you NEED / HAVE to use OIL!) on pocket knife and multi-tool blades to give them a bit finer edge. I have been sharpening tools from axes to mower blades thru scythes for 50 years when I was a farm boy. I can use a regular stone decently, but it is always tricky and takes paying close attention to keep right angle of blade on stone. With Lansky system this problem is eliminated and is excellent for anyone who has limited experience or difficulty in maintaining correct angle of incidence when sharpening knives. NO, it is NOT a system for a professional nor would I try to do a lawn mower blade on it!!! Even the 12" carving & large chef's knife, were probably slower than I could have done without the Lansky system. I would not use it on my wood chisels or plane blades either. But for 7-8" or less kitchen knives and pocket/belt knives it works great. Now some of the drawbacks of the system and a couple of suggestions. Drawbacks: * the guides are a bit flimsy as another reviewer commented. Still they work and if you don't try to get in a hurry and apply too much pressure they work fine. * getting blades properly set in locking jaws can be a bit tricky and there is a small learning curve. * the Super-C clamp has a little too much "play" in it, or mind did, but shimming with a piece of construction paper solved that problem in no time. * The stones do fairly quickly fill with steel from the blades. Cleaning stones with oil in the kit is NECESSARY!!! I found on 12" carving knife I needed to clean each stone after doing JUST that knife, even though I had done so with each stone just before starting on it. I used about 1/3 to 1/2 of the bottle of oil doing the 7 kitchen knives, 5 multi-tool blades, 2 belt knives, and 4 small to med. sized pocket knives. * The guide / blade holder should have the angle degree STAMPED on front of the side of the slots. It would help a lot in remembering which slot is which angle. Suggestions: * keep an old t-shirt type rag handy to wipe off oil, and when cleaning stones, clean twice for good cleaning, wiping in between. Old t-shirt or similar type CLEAN rag is vital. General shop rags should NOT be used, they and "new cloths" have too much "fuzz" which will clog or snag on stones. Also rub in oil to stone with finger tip lightly, it really works to float filings up out of stones. * The C - clamp makes the system MUCH easier to use and helps keep your fingers out of way of blades as you sharpen. Especially useful if doing more than 2 knives. * Set up and use a separate wire guide on each stone if you are going to do several knives, it saves a lot of time changing guide from stone to stone. That way you can do whole side blade from coarse to fine stones while still clamped in holder then turn blade over to do other side. * DON'T get in hurry or try to apply too much pressure, let the stones to their work, not you. Also there is NO safety guard on this system, hurrying could lose you chunk of finger.

Cheap metal, sloppy fitting. 17' doesn't work as set screw in way. Waste of money

This is the best value for money sharpener out there. Not stupidly expensive but not cheap. Stones are good quality and last a long time. The angle guide is a proven design Lansky invented like 35 years ago. Still one of the best. Yes the holder digs into your hand so wear cut resistant gloves when sharpening. All things considered for the money these are good performing accurate sharpeners. I trust my really good knives to these. If you care for your knives and want repeatable sharpening angles, long life stones and scary sharp knives buy Lansky.
