EZ Straw Lawn Repair Mix – Sun/Shade Blend – Combination Seed, Mulch, Fertilizer (28 lb. Covers 600 sq. ft.)

I have had good success with this and some failures. Now I know how to avoid the failures. The first thing you should know is that the seed wants to settle out of the straw and go to the bottom of the package. I assume this is why it comes in a tight bail wrapped in plastic. The first time I used this I had bare spots all over the place. On closer inspection there was no seed in the bare spots. When I realised what I had done I put the entire contents of the package into a large wheel barrel and mixed it up as well as I could by hand. The next section I did grew very well and evenly. It claims 10% more grass seed but I'm really not seeing that, however it does fill in. The first time I seeded the area with Scotts the grass seed all went to the bottom of my hill, this straw helps to keep it where you want it while it gets a root down. That's very helpful. I got some bags where it wasn't mixed very well from the start too. But the hand mixing solved that issue also. Loosening up the surface seems to help. However, it rooted anyway in areas on the hill I wasn't comfortable losening the dirt on because of the slope. I watered with well water but found rain water was more effective for groth. However, when watering use an indirect spray or you can move the straw and seed around and create bare spots. The straw will eventually stick to the dirt and help keep the seed from moving around. I got about 10 of these bails and got at least 1 with almost no seed at all in it and 2 that were obviously short on seed, so there is a little bit of a quality control issue going on but overall it works very well. I used the bails anyway ontop of the other applications because there is some fertilizer in there and extra straw on a hill can't hurt. Anyway I watered everyday and on hot days twice to keep the ground moist but not saturated. I Spread the first bail too thin and covered too much ground,. It still grew but it looked sparce for months but eventually filled in. So mix it first by hand carefully to avoid bare spots, loosen up the dirt where you can because it gives the root something hold onto and start digging in, don't let it go completly dry until roots are established and even after roots are established it's still going to need water at least every other day for a month so you don't lose any grass before it's established enough to be on it's own. This is not one of those things that you can just spread it out and come back next year and see a lush yard. It's more like growing flowers at first. Once its established then you can go on vacation. I hope this helps someone be more successful at growing your own grass.

Pros - I have been able to grow grass in areas where I haven’t been able to in the past. Easy to spread. Cons - I can’t tell where the grass seed has settled in the bag and effect can be spotty. Also don’t know if it will die out over the winter. I will buy again.

I ordered one of these and it worked so well I ordered about 5 more. Just put it down about two weeks ago and it’s already growing. Great product for south eastern lawns. Size is convenient and the product is easy to spread. I’ve just kept it watered and watched it work.

I am happy with this purchase: it is a convenient method to start or repair grass. I spread it in section where ducks will be, and watered it twice daily. In shaded areas where moisture is best retained grass was noticeable within 10 days. The sunny areas are now showing (at about week three.) I discovered this is available at the local Tractor Supply store.

NO seed were in the mixture so doubtful that there will be any grass that will come up. Very disappointing!

It grows well and it will fill in bald spots, but be prepared for it to contain quite a bit of weeds with it

I have used this in the past with excellent results. I live on a lake and the geese were eating my grass seed and then what new grass would emerge. This mixture kept the seed protected with the straw until the grass sprouted and lawn established. I have a yard with a sun and shade mix. The straw broke down and was gone leaving a beautiful green blanket. I love it.
