B. Toys Mitsubishi Pencil with Pencil Eraser 9850 Hardness HB K9850HB

This is a solid HB (#2) pencil with a smoother feel than most standard HBs. As expected, the Japanese manufacturing quality is excellent. The wood sharpens cleanly with minimal splintering, and the eraser is genuinely impressive, easily one of the best factory-attached erasers I’ve used.That said, for the price point, I really wish they had used cedar instead of the current wood. The graphite, while smooth, is lighter than I was expecting. That's probably from all the hype I kept hearing over and over, but the graphite is a solid dark HB.It’s a well-made pencil and a worthwhile addition to my pencil collection, even if I thinks it's over hyped 😂The attached writing shows the comparison with standard #2 HB pencils.

I recently came across this, and it really impressed me on multiple levels. Its standout feature is the elegant brown wrap that immediately catches your eye. The earthy tones of the wrapping give it a classic and refined look, something you might see on a desk in a writer’s retreat or a rustic art studio.As for its performance, this pencil is incredibly smooth. I use it mostly for writing notes, and the lead glides effortlessly across the paper, almost as if it were designed for the purpose of making handwriting a more enjoyable experience. The softness of the lead strikes a perfect balance—not too soft to smudge easily but just soft enough to give a dark, clear line with minimal pressure.

The Mitsubishi 9850 gets a lot of love from pencil experts. When I began collecting, I did not fully appreciate it as tends to happen when one meets a top model too early in their journey. The two Japanese HB (equivalent to a No.2 pencil in USA) pencils that appears on most pencil experts favorites list are this one and the Tombow 8900 (available in 3 grades, no eraser). A few years into collecting, it’s plain to see why they are tops.Is the 9850 as good as the Uni or Hi-Uni? Not to my hand and I’m not a believer that more expensive is better, but in this case it indicates a higher quality graphite core. Is it worth paying 3x more per pencil? Like everything else in life, it depends on one’s needs, preferences, and priorities.It’s feasible that some pencil users, certainly in the USA, might prefer the built in eraser of the 9850 that does not exist on standard Uni and Hi-Uni. Moreover, it may be preferred by writers who value longevity and superb point retention. The core may be a bit waxy for those who prefer a buttery blackwing core, but the trade off there is point retention from that soft graphite.Take a peek at the video and images of before and after to see the point barely wore down at the end of the page. Even if it doesn’t check your boxes for function, it may for form. It is a fine looking pencil with sleek hexagonal burgundy barrel and contrasting white eraser. A lovely addition to any desk.

This is a classic pencil of the highest quality.The best features of this pencil:1) smooth, glide on paper writing experience. If you haven't had the pleasure of writing with Mitsubishi pencils before, you will be in for a treat.2) perfectly centered leads and a cedar barrel. This is an important feature because the cedar barrel allows for easy reliable sharpening to a fine, sharp point3) impeccable fit and finish. If you appreciate the little touches, this pencil does not disappoint. Few manufacturers have this type of attention to detail. In this case, you get what you pay for.4) an eraser that erases well without smearing.You can buy two or three dozen cheaper pencils for the price of this, and for some that might make more sense. This pencil will not be for everyone, and certainly is priced at a point where these pencils are not "throw away".The pencil comes packaged by the dozen and comes imported from Japan. The delivery is a bit lengthier but the price is very good compared to domestic alternatives.Bottom line, this is an easy one to recommend highly without reservations.

I throw my pencils in my purse along with keys, lip stick, glasses. The tips do not break. I'm on Amazon, presently, looking for tip covers because I want to protect my purse lining, but I'm dumbfounded by how durable the graphite is.Update: Since I wrote this short review, I have gained a couple different boxes of Blackwing pencils with "balanced" and "firm" graphite. They are beautiful pencils and took over my purse, but lately I am writing more frequently and just more in general with pencils and I notice that the Blackwings are sort of tiring to use. I went back to my box of Mitsu-bishi and I may never wander again. Writing, drafting- these ARE the BEST. So smooth- they glide on all my papers. No hand fatigue. Perfect instruments!

I like these a lot, but since they stopped using cedar I have moved to other pencils. These were my go to for a looooong time. They are still great

Smooth and easy to erase and make corrections.I am also a professional musician. Pencils in the domain of music notation have specific requirements.When I was taking an arranging class (we had to hand write the scores), the instructor insisted that we only use #1 pencils to notate music, as they print darker and erase more cleanly when altering notation.An arranger from Las Vegas recommended Mirado Black Warrior (#1) pencils, which I used until they became unavailable. I went through various brands, some of which were vintage and unusual. (like Sinclair oil company pencils!)I had also purchased Ticonderoga #1 pencils...they were the worst! The lead kept breaking...like it was segmented. Hopefully they have resolved this issue, but I would recommend not getting these.I never purchased any of the super expensive pencils.I came across these, and especially on the recommendation of Scott A, took the plunge. I am very happy I did. These are perfect for my purposes. I HIGHLY recommend them.Smooth, sturdy lead, well centered, erases as cleanly as any #1 I've used, writes very smoothl. And the eraser is the best I've run across!Wish I found these earlier!

This is a beautiful pencil and writes very well, very smooth, doesn't feel scratchy, looks and feels high quality. A very nice wood case, appears good quality, but it is not an Incense Cedar, so it doesn't have the pleasant Cedar smell. The pencil by itself has no smell, but together all the pencils in the box smell like Ikea furniture.

(AGGIORNAMENTO: la gommina tende nel tempo ad indurirsi e cancellare poco bene).La gradazione HB lascia un segno dall'intensità simile alla HB della "Staedtler Noris", ma la scrittura con la "Mitsubishi 9850" è più morbida, la "Noris" ha una scrittura un po’ più dura e una gommina rosa che cancella meglio.Prima di comprarla avevo letto in internet alcuni commenti su questa "MitsuBishi 9850" e mi aspettavo lasciasse un segno un pochino più scuro.L'aspetto più convincente è la resistenza all'uso, nel senso che tiene bene la punta e permette di scrivere a lungo rimandando l’appuntamento con il temperino.ATTENZIONELa matita è leggermente più spessa dello standard (le "Staedtler Mars Lumograph" e le "Faber Castell 9000" hanno un diametro di 7.5 mm), questa "Mitsubishi 9850" ha un diametro di 7.9 mm. In pratica si può avere qualche problema perché non entra in alcuni temperini (es. Is perfect in all sense, the pigmentation and de dark tone is the correct one, the rubber is awesome, even with deep pencil marks and so on.As an profesional illustrator & animator with more than 15 year of career and as a eventual writer I'm very very very satisfied with it, I want to test the "Mitsubishi Uni-Ball Wooden Pencil 2B" that is very much a Standard together with Palomino Blackwing 602 in Animation (and cost half the price of the last one).Es perfecto en todos los sentidos, la pigmentación y la tonalidad son los adecuados, la goma es impresionante, incluso con marcas de lápiz profundas funciona a las mil maravillas sobre todos los papeles especiales y no especiales en los que lo he tenido la oportunidad de probarlo.Como ilustrador y animador profesional con más de 15 años de carrera y como escritor eventual, estoy muy, muy satisfecho con él. Je les ADORE !Ils sont grands, la mine est très douce et la gomme efficace. Les meilleurs crayons pour écrire vite et longtemps.Veillez à choisir un bon taille crayon pour ne pas détériorer ces petites merveilles !Edit : Je les ai rachetés un an et quelque plus tard et leur qualité est toujours aussi exceptionnelle. De plus, ils sont arrivés bien plus vite que ce à quoi je m'attendais. Service Parfait !Attention à ne pas les prêter, vous risqueriez de ne jamais les revoir !
