HC1850 Sewing and Quilting Machine, 185 Built-in Stitches, LCD Display, 8 Included Feet

2-day quick review I just bought this sewing machine and after using it for just two days I wanted to write a quick review. In short – – it’s amazing. I’ve been sewing for 50 years. This machine runs like a champ. Let’s hit the basics. Set up: simple and straightforward. When you fill the bobbin you can use the footpedal or the arrow on the face of the machine to wind it but you cannot use the arrow with a foot pedal plugged in. Took me a minute to figure that out. Easy fix. The upper thread is super straightforward like a traditional sewing machine. I really appreciate that you don’t have to Lower and raise the needle to get the bobbin thread up. That step isn’t necessary at all it happens automatically once you start sewing. There is a nifty cut off on the plate that cuts the thread and you are ready to go. Sewing: I just made a couple of new pillows for my sofa with piping and invisible zippers. What I really appreciate about this machine is when I get from one end to the other they are the same length. The two machines I had prior would always leave the top of the bottom Different lengths no matter how hard I tried or adjusted. As for the sewing itself it comes right along and you have a slider to control the stitch speed. You can press the arrow on the face of the machine to start without having to use the foot pedal or you can use a foot pedal if that’s what you’re accustomed to. Either way the actual sewing goes very well. Stitch options: I have more to choose from then I will probably ever use. What I really appreciate about choosing a stitch is that you increase or decrease the number in the digital display according to the stitched number you want to use. Best of all, it will tell you which specific press or foot to use with that specific stitch. How cool is that? Layout/design: very easy and intuitive. Not only is the quick reference guide in manual written out well but the machine itself is very visually appealing and easy to understand. I am more visually oriented so I appreciate the way the designers thought to layout the user experience. I’ve only used it for a couple of days and already it feels like I’ve had it for a long time. Overall: this machine is pretty lightweight considering how heavy my prior sewing machines were. Hopefully that won’t mean a sacrifice of quality long-term. But time will tell. I’m really pleased with this sewing machine. Speaking from 50 years of sewing machine it gets the job done, is easy to use, looks very nice, with easy to follow instructions.

Nice features, does what you want without unnecessary stuff I searched for a long time to find the right model. I was replacing an SQ-9285 and wanted something similar. The SQ-9285 is now made for the "All Mart" store line (you know the one). That means it is not the same quality as the other models anymore. This is lightweight enough to bring it to quilt retreats (though it doesn't have a hard sided case). It's fast and versatile. What it's lacking - This will not sew denim, vinyl, or heavy upholstery materials. That's where you want a vintage Kenmore or Singer. (Those will sew through anything. Ask me how I know.) Also, it's one of those "no oiling needed" machines. Do you know what that really means? It means you have to pay someone to maintain the machine for you. I want to be able to clean and oil my own machine. It has the narrow throat of your everyday machine. Serious quilters will get a mid arm machine or at least one with extended throat. (These require annual professional tune ups.) All in all, this is a really nice choice for garment sewing and quilting. It has some great features (push button throttle, feed dogs that drop, lots of fancy stitches). It's a good compromise between an expensive quilting machine and a vintage machine that lacks the fun features.

I am in total love with this machine. I am a new sewer, started in September 2015. I've done a lot of sewing by hand and dabbled a bit in mini courses when I was in third grade back in 1973. Lol. My first machine was a singer 4432 in September. Which has already gone to the shop once to have its hook timing fixed. For $86. For a machine I spent $139 on. Not very happy. Especially when three days after I got it back, the same thing happened. When the hook timing is off, you can't pull up the bobbin thread, so you essentially are unable to sew anything. And if you can't figure out how to fix it yourself – and it's not easy for a lot of machines and the 4432 is one of them — then you have to pay someone else to do it. Anyway, long story short I wasn't about to spend another $86 to get the hook timing fixed on a $139 machine that I'd already spent $86 on three days earlier. I decided to cut my losses and buy a better machine. This is where the brother HC 1850 comes in. I did a lot of research and found that brother was best for my needs. After speaking with the guy who repaired my singer, he told me that brother and babylock are made by the same company. That was pretty much all I needed to hear. So I had narrowed it down to this machine or the SE400 which is a combination embroidery/sewing machine. The price on this machine was $179 when I bought it. And the SE400 was $270 at the time of my decision. I decided against the embroidery machine simply for the reason that it would be a long time before I would actually have use of the embroidery. And I didn't want to discover many months after buying it that some part of the embroidery didn't work and I was now out of warranty. So I thought to just buy the lesser expensive of the two which was the HC1850. Wise choice because I am still discovering this machine after weeks of having it. And I will say that this machine performs extraordinarily well. It really "finesses" your sewing. The heavy duty from singer 4432 "bullied" my sewing. I found that the singer had a lot of bobbin jams and just really weird hissy fits for no apparent reason. And for a while I thought I was doing something wrong. I wasn't. Now that I have this machine, I am confident that it was the machine and not me. This machine is so easy to work with it is really a joy to use. I never sit down and start to use it and think, "what is this going to do to me today to make me fiddle around with it/fix it for an hour before I can actually start selling?" I never have any trouble with it. With the singer I always faced sewing with trepidation, and that's no way to go into a hobby you really like. I did a big project with painters dropcloth recently which can be very ravelly and linty. Once I got an error message early on saying that I needed to clean out the bobbin case and the race. I did that, extraordinarily easily, by the way, and have not had any problems since. Now I suspect I was getting similar problems with my singer 4432, but as that is a mechanical machine, it gives you no such prompting as to what you need to do or than anything is actually happening. It will just stop working - gives you bobbin jams, and then messes up your timing. I sat down yesterday and played around with a lot of the stitches – they are fantastic. And the monogramming, while not gorgeous, is pretty good. It would be great for labeling children's clothing and the like. So bottom line, if you're looking for a machine that is very easy to use, very lightweight but does not move while you were using it, comes with a number of feet, comes with the quilting table, and is extremely reliable and makes your sewing easier and a pleasant experience, try this machine. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Great sewing machine for the money. This was my first new machine in 25 years and I can’t say enough about how quiet and smooth operating it is. great machine for beginner , intermediate or just a nice 2nd machine.

I have only had my machine for about a month, but so far everything has been great. It came on time and was packaged nicely. Everything included in the description was in the box so no issue there. I have used it to sew a Christmas stocking and it managed to sew through several layers of cotton fabric and interfacing. The multiple speed options with the stop/start button and a foot peddle is great. I did not have to change the thread tension at all when I started sewing, although If I did need to it would be fairly easy. Changing the different feet was no issue, automatic threading worked well. I wish the power cord was a little longer especially since you should not use an extension cord with this machine. I only have 2 issues with this machine as a whole. Number 1 is the feed dogs. One of the first things I did was drop the feed dogs to make sure it worked. They dropped but when I pushed the lever back to raise them they didn't raise. I immediately panicked. This issue is not mentioned anywhere in the manual but if you search online it is a known problem. To fix it all I had to do was turn the lever to the raised position and sew a few stitches. They popped right back up but this so far has happened every time I lower them. Number 2 is the drawing up the thread section of the manual. You do not need to actually do that on this machine, it does it for you once you start sewing, but this is not explicitly stated in the manual. It does say that if your machine has that feature then you can just start sewing, but it can be a bit confusing to include that section in a manual for a machine that should have it. I think this was partly my fault but I spent a lot of time trying to draw up the lower thread when I didn't even need to. So far all the decorative stitches work well, once you have master continuous speed they come out even. The monogramming is really neat and you can program all the letters you want in a row, the font is small but I didn't buy this machine for that feature in particular. This is a good machine for a beginner sewer and is easy to use. The manual does tell you which stitches are for what, which fabric goes with which stitch, and detailed instructions that will answer most if not all questions.

I absolutely love this machine! I should clarify that I am no seamstress. I have always struggled with sewing machines that you try to get threaded correctly. Have you ever started to sew and the top looks wonderful but the bottom is all messed up and sloppy? Or you are sewing along and find that you aren't actually sewing real stitches, yes the needle is threaded and the bobbin thread is poking up... why isn't it sewing? Who knows? Sure it's a brand new machine and you take it back to Joanns Fabric Store and they say "It needs to be serviced, that'll be $99" or “the tension is off.” There it's fine. You get it home and sew, everything is just perfect for a little bit then it starts happening again. I swear every time I have ever tried to sew it was one of those kind of issues I always had. Most of my time has been with a seam ripper then the machine and patterns put together! Very rarely a finished product. After a while I just got fed up and had not sewn in 15 yrs. I actually had this machine for about a year before I took the plunge and finally opened the box. Honestly I don't know possessed me to even buy it. I guess after reading the reviews I started imagining all the wonderful things I could create and thought "I can do this! It even comes with a DVD!" Then I got it and thought "You are an idiot. You can't even thread the darn thing, you tossed out all those patterns and fabrics years ago and NOW you are a pride owner of a fancy pants sewing machine that has more stitches then you will ever use or know what they are for. Nice one. Where the heck are you going to hide it before your husband gets home? He is going to kill you and it will be justifiable homicide!" So needless to say it was hidden in the basement in a dark corner where my husband would never look! I pulled it out last weekend when he was out of town for the week and thought that I would try and make curtains for my sons bedroom. Curtains aren't all that scary, 2 straight stitches and I am done. I figured if I couldn't get it to sew correctly I could always use that fabric glue stuff. So I had some free time and pulled it out, looked at the quick guide and had that machine threaded in just a few minutes. Half-heartedly I started to sew on some scrap material. IT WORKED. Seriously it was perfect. I was amazed. I went to go and get the material for the curtains. During this time the unthinkable happened! My little girl pushed buttons on the machine! I about had a heart attack thinking that she messed up the dreadful tension and it will never sew right now!! The top was going to look fine and then the bottom was going to be a mess, I just knew it!! I put the piece of scrap material back in and the machine started to sew, the needle kind of went all over the place and acted funny. It was making the cutest little flower and leaf you ever saw! WOW! That's so cool looking! But can I EVER get it to sew a straight stitch again?? Believe it or not it wasn't that hard at all!!! Woo hoo! Just another push of a button and it was sewing in a straight line again! The Pros to this machine Easy!!! Has tons of bells and whistles! Just a couple of button pushes and you're making fancy stitches! Another push of a button and you are in the comfy safe zone of a basic straight stitch that looks nice on the top and the bottom! The Cons to this machine You will regret throwing away all those really cute Daisy Kingdom patterns from the 90s. No, not regret, much more then regret. You will be kicking yourself over them! Yes they are a wee bit old fashioned but dang they were so cute with the matching doll patterns! :( Even though YOU struggled through a semester of Home Ec in the 8th grade and a million hours of trying to put a little dress together without ANY success, your children that are 8-10 yrs old that have never sewn anything in their lives or endured Mrs Bolchovitch in Home Ec for an entire year, will be sewing cute little things out your scrap material like it was nothing. Just sick and wrong.

This is just the best little, light weight-do all machine! This is my second one (first one died after 10 years so no complaints here for the cost)! For traveling, classes and retreats where you never know what type of sewing you might be doing this is an amazing machine! And all the feet work between this portable machine and my favorite of all time Brother P1600!!!! Love love this!

Cumple con todo lo que indica, funciona adecuadamente y es muy fácil de usar una vez que se ha familiarizado con ella. Si no se tienen conocimiento en un principio hay que poner atención a sus ajustes por que de esto depende mucho la calidad de sus resultados, una vez entendido, los resultados son excelentes. Las formas de la costura se realizan a la perfección y se siente bastante resistente y estable.

I can't say enough good things about my new sewing machine, I absolutely love it!. This was my first computerized machine and I had been looking at more expensive ones but this one was a great price and gets consistently good reviews both here and in videos. It's easy to use, easy to set up (there are all kinds of videos on this machine). It's lightweight and although I wouldn't say it's heavy duty, it's fast and quiet. Right now I am just sewing face masks and it has significantly sped up my production. This machine is also intended to help me get started in quilting and you can't beat the price for the great accessories and the extension table that are included. If I could give it six stars for value for money, I would! Update: It’s now late 2025 and I still have this machine. I sewed close to 3000 face masks during the pandemic, and many towel products. I still love this machine!

Llego 4 días antes de la fecha probable lo cual es genial, hize mi pedido el martes en la noche y el viernes por la mañana ya había llegado😊excelente producto, es una maravilla, tenía mis dudas sobre qué tanta calidad tendría, pero pff es genial, es muy fácil de coser aún si no sabes hacerlo, viene un dvd con las instrucciones y también un folleto, viene bastante claro de todas las opciones que te da para utilizar esta máquina, lo que me hizo inclinarme por ella fue que tiene la opción de hacer alfanumérico a un precio accesible y lo hace bastante bien. Súper recomendable
