Fabulous book! I was raised in CA and family settled in northern CA in 1850. This book connected so many dots for me. The first book I have ever seen that wove the economics with the history etc. His development of "inclusion" of the indian tribes was brilliant. A must read if you want to understand the diverse and complicated state of California.

It provided some insights to California history that were new to me-- particularly the particular parts of state where hydraulic mining occurred.
