Datacolor SpyderX Capture Pro – Photo Tool Kit for precision color control from capture through editing

I was having arguments with my printers due to colours and darkness that I was gett8ng from them. They kept saying it was my files. So I got the spider calibration kit. Made a huge difference and they were partly right, but now I can compare and point out where prints are wrong.

So, the claim here is that this is the automated solution for screen calibrations to make sure your screens match and are colour calibrated at the same time. Well, that claim falls on it's face once you use this scam-gadget and calibrate your screens. They still do not match ! Upon getting in touch with Datacolour Support, they send me pages upon pages of this I should to make sure I have good conditions for calibration. I do all of those, the calibration is completed and the screens don't match. As a last troubleshooting step, Datacolour "specialists" want to eyeball and colour correct my screens manually. But... Isn't that why I bought this in the first place ! The Good - The Spyderchecker included in the package is big enough to be easily used in frames for colour correction in post. Much better than the smaller x-rite ones. The bad - The Calibration system and software is clunky and does not really deliver to the advertised claims. If you want a good reliable screen calibration system, look elsewhere.

Normalerweise schreibe ich ja keine Rezensionen (bin da zu faul für), aber hier kann ich einfach nicht anders, denn was ja für den Käufer hilfreich sein soll, lief hier wohl offenbar etwas schief. Aus diesem Grund muss ich da mal aus dem Nähkästchen der Farbkalibrierung plaudern. Da ich gern up-to-Date bin musste ich mir das Spyder X Capture Pro Bundle kaufen, als er im Angebot war und als Schwabe konnte ich nicht Wiederstehen (hab ja gespart) :) Nach dem Auspacken findet man zunächst eine Banderole um den Koffer. Die lohnt es sich anzuschauen, denn bereits da befindet sich der Hinweislink zum Download der Software. Ja und da wir in Zeiten der Digitalisierung leben ist es völlig normal zwischenzeitlich, dass Bedienungsanleitungen, Software oftmals nur noch digital zum Download zur Verfügung stehen. Charmant, denn ich lade immer die aktuellste Version herunter. Die Systemvoraussetzungen waren mir klar, über sowas erkundigt man sich grundsätzlich vorher insofern verstehe ich den Punkt Abzug nicht und dies als Bewertungskriterium heranzuziehen in meinen Augen Unsinn. Die meisten Fotografen - die dieses Produkt auch ansprechen soll - haben die notwendige Software zur Bildbearbeitung die es gibt nunmal auf den Systemen Mac und Windows laufen. Alle enthaltenen Produkte sind einwandfrei. Ja sie bestehen aus Kunststoff, jedoch sind sie gut verarbeitet, leicht und funktionell. Als Fotograf will ich keine schwere Ausrüstung mit mir umherschleppen, sondern leichte und gut zu verstauende Hilfsmittel mit mir nehmen. Am Lenscal klappert nichts! Mein Mann hat mir meine Objektive kalibriert. Das ging nach etwas Tüftelei in den Kameraeinstellungen gut und kostete lediglich etwas Zeit. Den Cube seit mehr als 3 Jahren im Einsatz und wer behauptet der wäre ne „Graukarte“ hat auch hier den Sinn nicht verstanden, denn er ist weitaus mehr! Die Chromkugel dient zur Messung des Spitzlichtes, um überbelichtete Bereich zu analysieren, weiße Flächen zum Definieren der Lichter im Verhältnis zu den Spitzlichter, spektral neutrale Grauflächen zur Messung der Farbemperatur und der Mitteltöne (immer, überall und unter allen Bedingungen!), eine Lichtfalle zum Definieren des absoluten Schwarzwerts sowie schwarze Oberfläche zum Definieren der Schatten im Verhältnis zur Lichtfalle. Diese Informationen stehen 1:1 auf der Herstellerseite. Wenn man das Verstanden hat und die Anwendung auch in den Bildbearbeitungsprogramme kennt, dann weiß man dass es mehr ist wie nur eine Graukarte. Zudem ist er wirklich handlich, gut zu verstauen und kommt nun in meine 2. Fototasche. Besonders gern nutze ich Ihn bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen, wie beispielsweise bei einer Hochzeit in einer Kirche. Der Checkr ist mir bereits vertraut. Ich kenne ihn von unterschiedlichen Workshops und lieh ihn mir bei einem Bekannten, wenn ich mit unterschiedlichen Kameras arbeitete. Jetzt war es an der Zeit endlich einen eigenen zu haben und nun ist er mein. Und zu guter letzt mein Lieblingstool - seit vielen Jahren. Der SpyderX Elite! Software runtergeladen, installiert - problemlos - Monitor kalibriert - fertig! Auspacken - installieren - glücklich sein :) Ich gebe 5 Sterne und kann nur sagen, dass ich jedem der die Fotografie ernsthaft betreibt die Produkte von Datacolor empfehle. Auch der Support ist seit Jahren einfach top! Für welche Produkte man sich entscheidet liegt am Einzelnen. Ich kann sie alle nur empfehlen!

So if you are looking at this product you probably already have a good idea of what it does and why you want it. If not hit up you tube for some more information. TLDR: Wow these things are great for color cal and testing camera accuracy. I used a spyder 3 for ages and it did the job fine, the company has functionally deprecated that version and I couldn’t get it working on a new system so I bit the bullet and bought the new one. The new readouts for the software are great and I love getting a map of the monitors gamut that I can reference. The software still needs knowledge on the users part to really work right, but thats how color correction works. The cube And color pallet are awesome, very well made and sturdy and they really let you check cameras and get things to a solid base line over and over. Great for testing cell phone cameras for noise and color accuracy. Love the package and every part in it. The case is nice too.
