A: I used this to insulate the spark plug wires on my hot rod works great no burnt wires 
not sure if this classifies as cooler

A: I would think constant rubbing would eventually wear through the heat shield
You can purchase plastic wire sheathing to protect your wires
It comes already split, just a matter of fitting the wires inside. 
Will protect from heat and chafing and much less work than cutting the heat shield and zip tying it all
The stuff is not very expensive less than the heat shield

**Q: Does this open to wrap around wires or do the wires have to be slid thru this?**
A: It’s completely closed whatever you have must be slid through it.
