Playing Fast & Loose With The Known Facts
Having enjoyed the television series The Tudors, I had hoped that The Spanish Princess wouldbe of the same high standard, and while I enjoyed it as good costume drama it plays fast andloose with the history of the period. When each episode includes the words, " Some historical events and characters have beenaltered in the film for dramatic purposes", you know that they will have taken liberties withthe truth.Prince Arthur was 15 when he married Catherine of Aragon in 1502 and he died a few monthslater. His younger brother Prince Henry of York later to become King Henry VIII, was only 10years old at the time but the film makers use of 'artistic licence' has cast a 20 something,Ruairi O'Connor as the younger brother which makes a complete mockery of the known facts.Despite that and other non factual 'errors' the main character actors were very good.Angus Imrie played a convincing Prince Arthur, Charlotte Hope is a feisty Catherine andRuairi O'Connor is brilliant as the series progresses. Dame Harriet Walter plays MargaretBeaufort and gives the part her all as usual. A notable portion of the series, almost asub-plot, centres on the relationship between Lina and Oviedo admirably played byStephanie Levi-John and Aaron Cobham their characters were great to see. Some of the male characters are wearing wigs and others have modern hairstyles whichis a little puzzling, but over all it was a 4 star effort. If you like costume drama it is worth watching, just allow for the historical inaccuracies.8 episodeswith Subtitles.

Spanish princess
A good film..But lots of dependencies from the white princess, Maggie poles husband had one hand... in this sequel he has the usage of two!!Also I'm sure they should have 3 children The children in Spanish princess are not of the right ages!King Arthur looks ridiculous & not a believable character!!If sequels are to be made, believed try sticking to strong characters & paying attention to the details of previous storylines!

Laugahbly inept
The only thing about this which is true is the title, in that Catherine was indeed both Spanish and a Princess. At the end of the first episode (which is the only one I will watch) there is a disclaimer to the effect the certain historical events have been changed. WHY? If there is a perfectly good, and accurate, story to tell, why tell a different one?I really don't know where to start, but a few examples will suffice. There were no black people in either England or Spain around 1500 and even if there had been they would not have been accepted as ladies at court.England was not bankrupt under Henry VII. Far from it. Henry was a shrewd and efficient financial manager who handed on a full treasury to his son. The dowry was useful and welcome, but not a necessity to keep England afloat, as the story expressly says. The story implies that Margaret Pole and Elizabeth of York were sisters. They were not: they were cousins. Margaret was the daughter of Clarence, whereas Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward IV. Nor is there any evidence that Elizabeth doubted Margaret's loyalty. Yes, some of her family rebelled later but there is no evidence that she herself was disloyal. When she was subsequently executed by Henry VIII it was for much more complex reasons. There is no evidence that Isabella of Castille demanded the execution of Perkin Warbeck and Edward of Warwick. Incidentally, it would have been nice to have been told who they were and what it was all about rather than simply to throw in one potentially baffling reference. As for the images of Isabella riding into battle and killing people in hand to hand combat, words fail me.There are certain things which are an insult to one's intelligence: this is one of them.

You must read Phillippa Gregory’s the constant princess after this
Loved the whole production, best performance is dame harriet walter as lady Margaret Beaufort , she makes me viscerally loathe the character.i did find her near execution of Oviedo a bit too far but the execution of Dudley for oppressively taxing the Kings subjects was a masterpieceMargaret Poles character is truly heartbreaking and beautifully portrayed
