Did I make a wrong purchase?

I also got the right box cover, but the mount with the articulating arm. Rather than wait for return and refund or being sent the right product. I just removed the articulating arm, removed the vesa mount and put it on the stand as shown in the product page. Has worked for me for the last 3 years.

Will this work for a 34" pc monitor?

Yes, I use an LG 34UM69G-B 34-Inch 21:9 UltraWide IPS Monitor. Works wonderfully.

How can I hide the cables? Anyone found a solution? Is there a hole?

No, there is no cable management.

can you pan left and right with this mount?

This mount can swivel left and right.
