Can you remove the batteries and run only from usb? or does a working battery always have to be installed and charged?

There are no batteries to remove. You charge the light and then they stay lit for a period of time. I have the little suctions attached on each side of my bathroom mirror where I do my makeup. I just rotate the light and charge one while I’m using the other one. So to answer your question you just keep the light charged with the usb plug that comes with the lights. If you wanted them to be portable you can take it with you until it needs to be charged again. My bathroom doesn’t have good lighting so these help so much.

Does this work while plugged in if it needs a charge?

The lights will function when plugged into a charger, but I don't think it would be practical to do so, as the lights are "light in weight" and the weight of a charging cord would likely pull the light out of position. Mine don't lose charge at the same time (I use 2), and so if one goes out while I'm using it, the other is sufficient to finish. These aren't perfect, but better than nothing.

Maybe 20 minutes. I can shave my face 3-4 times before charging. Sometimes, I'll just go ahead and charge the lights, just so one doesn't die while in use the next time.
