BioGaia Osfortis, Women’s Probiotic for Strong Bones, Immune Balance & GI Wellness, Contains L. reuteri 6475, 60 Capsules, 1 Pack

Purchased 14 times now, so clearly I'm sold on this. BioGaia Osfortis is marketed specifically toward women for bone health, but the active ingredient, L. reuteri ATCC PTA 6475, has research benefits that aren't gender-specific. This strain has been studied for bone density, immune function, and gut health in general populations. I'm a man. I take it daily. No issues, only benefits. Better digestion, fewer minor illnesses, and overall improved gut function. The bone health angle was a bonus given that osteoporosis isn't exclusively a women's issue, just more commonly discussed in that context. The capsules are easy to take, unflavored, and don't require refrigeration. At under $0.75 per day, it's reasonably priced for a quality probiotic with actual clinical research behind the specific strain. Don't skip this just because the packaging says "women's." Look at the science, not the marketing.

This product is the most effective in terms of its effects. However, what I like the most is the combination of probiotics and prebiotics in it, which can provide more support for natural balance. The effects are not immediate. You need to be patient to see the benefits it brings. After using it for some time, I did notice an improvement in the freshness and comfort of the product. I am a guy. I don’t know about bone density effects for ladies. This review is for the guys. Even though BioGaia will tell you the Harvard mouse testicle phenomenon from 6475 has not been seen in humans, I was pretty sure mine were bigger. Then my wife said something about it. So, I think, maybe, yes on that topic. Furthermore, BioGaia will tell you that 6475 does not make yogurt. I have been playing with these in a microbiology lab and I agree with BioGaia. 6475 is persnickety, quite sluggish on lactose, and quite unable to control a dairy prep before faster tramp bacteria dominate the system. Yogurt bacteria are perfected for dairy; 6475 seems unsuited for dairy. If you wanna play microbiologist, you can culture this up in a MRS broth if you know something about aseptic sterilization technique and growing lactobacillus. An all-plant soy peptone/glucose/yeast extract broth also works. I have cultured these and can tell you they are indeed viable. But, you really gotta be on top of your sterilization as 6475 is not the fastest and anything less than excellent sterile prep opens the door for tramp microbes. Some microbes are easy to grow, some not so easy. 6475... not so easy. Now that I have experienced growing 6475 in the lab and seen the level of aseptic technique required, and based on my own tests with dairy (which support BioGaia’s assessment) my conclusion on yogurt is: Sorry, you yogurt makers are probably making yogurt with tramp bacteria; your sterilization is much less than mine in the laboratory and thus your door is wide open for tramp bacteria. Recall, “lacto”bacillus refers to lactic acid production and does not imply anything regarding lactose as a food; the fact that anybody assumed they could make yogurt with this likely stemmed from them having forgotten that basic fact from undergrad microbiology. lacto is lactic acid, not lactose. So, the powder in these capsules is legit. Yes, it is alive and well and, seemingly yes, it may make ‘em bigger, guys. And, finally, 6475 is hard to grow, which justifies the price IMO.

Good product. Smell and taste nice. I didn’t give 5* because of the maltodextrin. Could a healthier alternative be used? Am taking this for bone health. Too early to tell if it’s effective.

This is a rare supplement in that it actuallywent thru double-blind clinical trials. This means neither people taking it, nor those measuring results knew who was getting the actual supplment and who was getting a placebo. I started taking raloxifene shorly after I began Osfortis. But, vimportantly, my most recent bone density results held steady in two cases, and improved in one. That was a first for me, since I had noted decreases in bone density over almost 15 years.

I use this as starter and it works perfectly. Almost has a cream cheese texture and taste. Only minor issue is it is very expensive.

After two months of taking this probiotic I can tell that my finger nails are stronger. When I get my next DEXA scan (March’27) I will learn if it has helped my bones also.

Many people have seen the blog postings on this particular probiotic and the benefits. I can't speak as to whether those benefits associated with the strain are accurate, I can only speak to the amounts that are put in this capsule as not being enough to provide those benefits. The selling point on these seem to be that they are a yogurt making alternative, but that does not seem to be the case in my experience. The cost of these are also outrageous, and on top of that, they are NOT gluten-free as they are made via barley (just check the Q&A). Furthermore, the Q&As are also silent from the company in regards to shipping these in the summer, no they are not freeze-packed and yes you are wasting your money if you're purchasing these in +75 degree weather. If you are interested in trying this strain then get tablets that you can crush and go through the hassle of creating the yogurt, because the strain counts and environmental exposure associated with this product renders it worthless!
