Replacement for the DC65, NOT the DC40. This is the 'full power' version of the Dyson vac.
I want to start out by saying this is THE Dyson. The 'full' version when it comes to power. I state that because a lot of questions, answers to questions and reviews here state a lot of stuff that just isn't true. This Dyson, the Multi Floor, is the replacement for the DC65. Just do an Amazon search on the DC65 and it will tell you it's only available through 3rd party sellers and that the Multi Floor has replaced it. There is one 3rd party seller in particular who is answering questions about the comparison of the DC65 and this Multi Floor and says this is the DC40 and that the DC65 is much more powerful. That's a bald face lie. Most likely he's left holding the bag on old stock that was overpriced by $100 and now the new version is out for $100 less, probably less than he paid for his DC65's and he's worried about that. I did some checking by googling "Dyson DC40 vs Multi Floor" and Dyson "DC65 vs Multi Floor" http://www.2compareit.com/dyson-ball-multi-floor-vs-dc40-review/ http://www.2compareit.com/dyson-ball-multi-floor-vs-dc65-review/ If these 2 comparisons don't convince you that the Multi Floor is the replacement for the DC65 and not the DC40, then good luck to you!! Power, weight, size, suction rating, etc. The only real difference I can see is the power cord is slightly shorter than the DC65; 'only' 30' instead of the original DC65 35'. With all that out of the way, here's my review. I have an older Dyson vac. It is the DC17 Animal with all the attachments. It worked and does still work o.k. It is very hard to push along thick carpeted floors and loads down so much doing so, it sometimes trips out it's internal thermal breaker. Eventually the thermal breaker needed replacing. Of course that was outside warranty by then! My wife was really tired of pushing it around. I was stuck with the 'heavy' vacuuming. So when this model came up on a lightning deal of some sort, I snatched it up. Testing it on a runner rug in front of our kitchen sink, trash compactor and dish washer, where our dogs regularly hang out to catch scraps as dishes are done, I fired up the Multi Floor. (A brief assembly that was easy to do preceded this testing) After vacuuming this rug, 8 x 2 sized, I emptied the new bin on some paper towels on the counter. It was shocking how much dirt and dog hair was in that rug. I pride myself on keeping floors clean. I even run a Roomba every day between my weekly vacuums. It's just me, wife and dog. No kids, guests or anyone else to add to our filth. A lot of dog hair and a lot of dust dirt was now on the towels. I tackled the rest of the house and was equally amazed how much the old vac had been leaving behind and the Roomba was incapable of picking up as well. I'm not sold on the Ball technology, but it's worlds better than the old Dyson style of slogging the vac around the room and across the floor. To move the head, lean the handle in the direction you want to go. That's opposite of the old vac where you moved it like a wheelbarrow; swing the handle left to point the head right and visa versa. Think more like steering it instead of pushing it around and you'll get the idea. Steer left, turns left. Steer right, turns right. One thing I don't care for is that it won't stay in the upright locked position when I go to move it from room to room. I unlatches and the head rests on the floor. Not a big deal. Not enough to take away a star even. I'm quite satisfied with the performance of this vacuum. It's very easy to use. Practically pulls itself across carpets and rugs. Easy to pull back too, compared to the old Dyson I had. ****EDIT**** I just tried to use the very expensive attachments from my older Dyson DC17 on this newer one. They don't fit!! The hose fitting is the same size as the attachment end. Evidently the old Dyson had a slightly larger fitting than this new one and now my attachments are worthless to me. I'm not about to spend a bunch of money for more attachments, so it's off to the garage to build an adapter to get these to work on the new Dyson. So attention Dyson; You really do a big disservice with your customers for not standardizing the hose and attachments on your vacuums that your customers have spent good money on.

Great vacuum!!!
Okay, let me start of by saying I've owned two vacuums before this one in my adult life. One was a Kenmore my mother gave me after college and the other was a Bissell. The Kenmore did it's job but was roughly 25 years old when I finally got the Bissell about four years ago. It has been an awful vacuum for me with little power. The only cool thing about it was the retractable cord. My basis for judging the Dyson is use in my house which has carpet, rugs, and wood floors. I'm breaking this review into four categories so hopefully it is helpful to some folks. Build/materials: Okay, before I purchased this vacuum I did a good deal of research. One of the main points of criticism was the materials used (mainly plastic). The line of argument is that it is cheaply made and will not be a durable machine. First, I knew before purchasing that the plastics issue was largely make weight without citing some specific problem with the Dyson (like part X breaks for a ton of people). I didn't see any of that --- just general worries or concerns. I also know that plastics are plenty durable even compared to many metals. For example, I still have a Kenmore --- which is nearly all plastic --- it's been around since the 1980s. Third, the beauty of products that are made of plastics is that their components are easily replaceable which actually makes most products more durable, not less. As far as my own experience, the Dyson seems really solid but also light which I Iove. One final point about the plastic/durability issue, what the heck are people doing with vacuums that they fear the Dyson will not hold up? Remds me of an eposide of "The Office" where Dwight Schrute threw a baby stroller off a building to see if the costs (I think they said it was $500) was really "worth" it. Design/features: There are four things I love about this vacuum in terms of features. One is the ball that it "rides" on. It is a joy to vacuum because of it as I feel like it is gliding. Sure it takes some getting used to but once I got the hang of it I was vacuuming all over the place. Second, I love the wand with the long extension which allows you to keep the vacuum at the bottom of stairs and clean each step right up to the top. Amazing. I was actually shocked that they vacuum didn't tip over when I got to the top. Third, I'm impressed so far with the self-adjusting cleaning head. I've got hard wood floors, carpets, and rugs in the house. So far it has done a great job on all those surfaces. Fourth, the push button dirtbin is a net and rather "clean" feature. With my old Bissel I would get dirt everywhere trying to emptying out the tray. Not with the Dyson. It allows you to just take the canister out and place it over the trash to release the dirt. My only complaint is the lack of a retractable cord. Really annoying that you have to manually loop the cord. I did it for years with my Kenmore but I got used to the Bissell's retractable cord (Hey, it did one thing right) . Power/Cleaning: Wow! This machine cleans like no other. I can't believe I lived without this vacuum for this long. My wife had just cleaned the rug area of our living room (with the Bissell) not two days before we got the Dyson. Once it was delivered I used it right away in the living room and boy did it get a ton of dirt, etc. Just amazing.

Love this vacuum.
Been using this vacuum for just over a month and I love it. Pros: - Super STRONG suction - Lightweight - Easy to maneuver - Easy to empty container - Self adjusting height (goes from wood floors to different carpet heights) - Easy to change attachments. For people with pets that shed: I have a Golden Retriever that sheds like crazy. In stead of buying the "Pet" version, I bought this vacuum and ordered the Tangle Free tool separately (link below). And it's AWESOME. Works perfectly! Dyson Tangle Free Turbine Cons: - Not really a "con" but worth mentioning that it did take a little getting use to the "ball action" - how to twist the handle to make it turn. That said, it makes really tight turns. - Extension hose (when extending) is pretty stiff. Might be a design thing in order for it to retract properly. But it works great. - Locking mechanism to keep the vacuum upright is too lose. Meaning, it doesn't take a lot of effort for it to unlock and the handle fall to the floor. My guess it's a side effect for having a locking mechanism that can be disengaged by just pushing down on the handle. It does make it a little bit more convenient but I'd be concerned about it wearing down over time. I'd prefer a better lock even if it required a two-step process (like a separate release). Bottom line: Great vacuum. Easy to use. Sucks up everything. I'd buy it again.

I would recommend they provide a tad more text or a bit ...
Thanks to Amazon's Prime Day, this vacuum is finally an affordable option and it arrived this evening. I'm in consulting and so I would say that I'm fairly intuitive about how things work, but found that the instructions to assemble required a lot more insight than one should require of the end user. After the initial use, this is the only reason I'm giving it a four star vs. five star. I would recommend they provide a tad more text or a bit more visual insight as their product is quite different than traditional models. Once I figured out how to release the unit (there's no lever, you just pull back), I turn it on and it does suck into the floor as one always hoped former machines would perform. Like other users, I'm pretty impressed with what it pulls off the floor. For example, I have weekly maid service and so my home stays pretty clean, but I do have pets. Both dogs shed far more than anyone concerned about keeping their home clean would appreciate. But, they are both rescue dogs so I love them and pick up all the hair. Most vacuums usually leave plenty of hair embedded in the fibers, which are almost impossible to get out, which was the case for a free standing rug in the hallway. That rug is the cleanest it has ever been after the Dyson did its job. What's more impressive is that the maids came yesterday and the amount of hair picked up in just one room is impressive. Now, here's what we don't know yet. How long will this enthusiasm last with a well performing machine? Will I still be happy months from now? Will I have problems with the clogging? That is a bit of an unknown, but I believe Amazon stands behind its purchases. And, to the point from someone else about concern about whether this was a genuine product, all indicators in my purchase including the way the warranty is included and the left markings from the Dyson location to Amazon fulfillment center makes me believe it is a genuine product. In fact, it even crossed my mind that the way the items were packaged would be a very expensive printing approach and not something a duplicator would attempt. In the end, this appears to be a great product and seems to deliver on the brand promise initially. Let's hope this honeymoon lasts for a long while. :)

Love, love, love my Dyson!!!!!
Bought the Dyson because my "copycat" that I bought in 2012 died. Had one problem putting the vacuum together -- specifically, attaching the wand, and had to search for a how-to video online. Once that was figured out, it took some getting used to the ball because it feels like the vacuum is tipping over. I also had to search online for a how-to video on how to use the wand and attachments. Now that that's all figured out, the Dyson is just AWESOME! Someone commented about the picture of the lady using the wand being impossible -- I agree. The hose is VERY TIGHT. But, if you bring the vacuum up against the wall (instead of stretched out behind you), the wand will work just fine. Best feature -- how you can switch from attachment wand to vacuum just by the position of the vacuum. So cool! The suction is awesome. I have two cats and one dog. They don't really shed that much, but I still like to keep pet hair at bay. The Dyson took care of that no problem -- from my hardwood floors, to my wool rugs, to the kitty tree carpet. I also have some indoor/outdoor rugs in my mud room. My old vacuum was never able to get them completely clean. The Dyson had them looking like new! Plus, when I went around the house and vacuumed, I could not believe how much the copycat had been leaving behind! I have a two-story house, and the Dyson is light enough for me to carry up and down the stairs (using the handrail with the other hand for safety, of course). Can't say enough good things about this vacuum! So glad the copycat died so I could finally get the real thing.

Best purchase ever!
I could write a novel about this vacuum and how much I love it. Best purchase ever. Before I got this amazing piece of machinery, I had some crappy little $19 stick vac from Wal Mart. It basically pushed around dirt. In the last two years, I've moved into my own apartment and adopted a cat. It was time to invest. I have always dreamed of a Dyson (weird? probably) and couldn't wait to finally get one. I did research on which model I wanted to get. I didn't want to spend more than $300, which limited things, but this one had such great reviews, and what I really cared about was the ability to really pick up dirt and hair, longevity, and multi-surface use. I can't speak to the longevity because I've only had it for a few months, but it has been nothing short of amazing in the other two ways. The day I got my vacuum, I vacuumed with my stick vac and my carpets and tile appeared clean. I used the Dyson as soon as I got it and OH MY LORD. I filled the whole tank with dirt and hair and dust and God knows what else in less than FIVE MINUTES. Please note, I live in a 400 square foot studio apartment - and it still filled it! So gross to realize how much dirt I was living among. But SO GLAD I was cleaning it up! It works seamlessly across my carpet and tile. The tank is SO easy to empty and no mess at all, which is amazing. The vacuum is a little bit heavy- it is easy to maneuver with the ball, but just a little heavy if you don't have a lot of upper body strength. I couldn't be happier and am so glad I made the investment in this!

Powerful vacuum but FAR FROM ACCEPTABLE BUILD and UPRIGHT shouldn't be in the title
UPDATE/EDITED 6/15/16 PROS: - If you've never owned an older Dyson or you never owned a vac at all, it's fine! - Powerful vacuum when it's free of clogs and has clean filters - long cord - easy to empty canister - swivel action is fine - brush has been easy to clean - vacuum is engineered simplistically, making dismantling it an easy task (already had a clog and overheating issue) CONS - Vacuum will OVERHEAT due to dirty filters (depending on dust/pets you may get more than 10 vacs in before this happens. Our vacuum was radiating about 140-160 degrees near the ball filter after 10 uses). When we called Dyson, a Dyson rep advised that the vacuum will shut down by itself when it gets too hot <pause for thought> Why would you need that to begin with? Why do the filters clog so fast? Why can I fry an egg on my vac when this happens? How hot could this vac get? What if the vac decides it doesn't want to shut down by itself when it gets too hot? ....I had no idea vacuuming was this complex and hazardous O.O - Extremely, repeat: extremely difficult to get the vacuum to "snap" back into an upright position. Unable to "tilt and roll" vacuum to another room as there is no "lock" feature to stop the handle from entering the "let's start vacuuming" stage. - wand attachment: I think it is badly engineered and takes too long to line up and slide back over the rims after use. I dislike that the hose is not able to connect to the wand and instead just hangs there. Dyson claims this is so we can remove the wand more easily, but honestly, it appears broken to me, causes frustration and is aesthetically unappealing. - wand attachment hose: while a decent length when the vac is not running, it shrinks up to an almost useless length due to the powerful suction when the vac is on. - too powerful: yeah, I said it. I can no longer vacuum any small rugs in my house (bathroom, entry etc) as this vacuum tries to eat them regardless of whether the brush is on or off and there's no option to choose less power. So yes, my hardwoods, tile and large area rugs are clean, but my small rugs now need to be taken outside and beat with a broom (yay O.o). - cord: this model doesn't even have a way to snap the cord onto the vac so it's out of the way when in use. - brush activate button: the height tolerance between on and off is so minimal I have to look at the button from a perpendicular view to tell if it's depressed. It also has a naughty habit of deciding to shut off by itself. Overview: Powerful, but not the quality or customer friendly build I was expecting from a brand like Dyson. I could not recommend this purchase. My last Dyson upright lasted over a decade and the only thing I ever cleaned was the brush head. It was sturdy, didn't overheat, had more customer friendly features, could take a beating and still get the job done well. Time and greed changes everything it seems. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I so wanted to love this vacuum and as far as power, I do. Between 2 kids, 2 adults, 3 cats and a dog, this vacuum has performed great. Although I can no longer vacuum my shower rug, or any of my small rugs because the vac wants to eat them, my floors are clean. The cord is very generous, the swivel action is also nice. The canister is easy to empty and insert back and the bristle roller has been easy to keep clean. Now for the not so great: Its hard, I mean aggravatingly hard to get this vacuum snapped back into an upright position. Just when I think I got it and start to walk away, the thing crashes back down. I also can't roll the vacuum to another room without having the handle in its "let's start vacuuming" position. The extension pole doesn't line up correctly (release button is always off to the side somewhere) and connecting it back onto the vacuum takes more time than it should as it has to line up and slide over rims instead of simply clicking in.

Buy this or buy new carpets. This thing sucks so good that we saved an entire carpet that we would have thrown out. The carpet now looks like new. It's powerful and it wants to move so you have to control it. Turn off the brush and it works great on floors too. The only thing that we are still trying to learn is the wand. The vacuum is great and the wand works great for on the spot edging, quick to remove and reinstall. I haven't used it to do ceilings yet. We tried to use the wand on the dogs bed and the wand was a bit unyielding. We have a 16 year old Miele, the vacuum the Dyson is replacing, and it still works fine for ceilings, dog beds and cars. I like the Dyson because you can see what you are picking up, THERE IS NO EXTRA COST FOR BAGS!!! because there are no bags. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to dump it. I think outside into a bag then into the trash would be best. Tried dumping directly into the kitchen trash and all that did was make a big cloud of dust, ha. I love the Dyson the house looks great!

"Man's Best Friend"
Picked up one of these last week from Amazon and I must say I am extremely pleased with it. A bit pricey but well worth it. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is so true. The thing I like the best about this Dyson is the superior suction. It's the best I have ever used and makes cleaning carpets so easy. I like how it's easy to maneuver around and under furniture etc. No dust bags to mess with, simply remove dust canister, empty, and attach back on with a click. This Dyson could very well be the new "Man's Best Friend". Highly recommend!

Having used a VAX Air for the last 3 years on our fully carpeted bungalow with great effort because of the knap on the carpets we decided to purchase this Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner. Both my wife and I now find vacuuming the carpets effortlessly as this carpet cleaner glides over the carpets in any direction. The only minor fault is the red indicator light which glows when switched on stopped working but not a problem.
