How is this knife packaged? It will be a gift and would like to know if it comes in a Wusthof box.

Uh, I don't know what this whole "box" deal is. Mine arrived today in nothing but a (damaged) paper sleeve covering the blade, all inside a plastic bag. Really disappointing and definitely not gift-worthy.

Is this too much knife for peeling an apple? Obviously, we would use it for much more, but I'm trying to decide between this one and another.

I gave this knife for a gift, but am familiar with Wustoff. In my opinion, it would be a great knife for peeling an apple. Just handle with great respect. It is a very sharp instrument. One observation that I heard: you are more likely to get cut with a duller knife because of using more pressure with the possibility of a slip. I'm just such a fan of the way Wustoff classic knives cut better than anything else I've used.

what type of a hand sharpener to you recommend to sharpen this knife with?

I have the knives sharpened at a local shop every year or so, and in between I use a steel like this one: http://www.amazon.com/W%C3%BCsthof-4473-Wusthof-10-Inch-Sharpening/dp/B00009WDT8 to keep the edge sharp.

Why are some packaged and shipped securely in a nice box and others not?? Are you ordering from the same company?

Yes, both are ordered from Wusthof USA. It depends on what the company orders. Some people prefer boxes and others prefer the sleeves. Sleeves are smaller to store and some people like to use the sleeve for storage.
