After 3 years, the screen has suddenly gone black (both viewfinder and screen), so I am unable to take pictures. Anyone else experienced this?

I am going through the same thing right now... I turn it off and then power it back up, and it works again. But then next time I go to use it, if I have it turned on and wait 30 seconds to take a photo, it goes blank again. It's becoming a pain. I am wondering if maybe its just the batteries, I am still using the original Kodak Batteries it came with.... I have recharged them though and seems fine, until it blacks out again.

My es Z990 will not download pictures to my pc even if I install the chip?

Get one of SD card readers to download. You take the memory card out of the camera, insert it into a downloader and import photo files to your PC. Does it have seperate battery for time? I loved my KodakZ740, which has only one issue: it does not remember the time once you change the battery.

Yes, it has a separate rechargeable coin cell (Ni-Mh) on the mainboard. You can't replace it. Always use 2 or more sets of batteries, so you can swap them directly. If you take the batteries out to charge them for hours, the coin cell will discharge to a great extend. According to general specs it can do this for approx. 300 cycles (approx. 3000 cycles if discharged for only 10%). If the coin cell can't hold charge anymore, the camera loses date/time every time you swap the batteries. So always keep charged batteries in the camera, whether usb charged in camera or by using multiple sets.

Any body have any problems with smart capture, seems like mine sometimes shifts the focus when you depress the shutter. Thanks Tom

The focusing occurs when depressing the shutter button half way before shooting. You must allow time foe the auto focus to adjust before depressing the shutter button fully.
