does it work for making hash browns

It makes excellent hash browns. I use mine almost daily for making them. I peel the Potatoes, I usually have larger ones that will go in the machine without cutting in half longways. Shred them, Rinse really well to get the starch off them and I then put them in a bowl covered with water and pre cook for about 3-4 mins in the microwave, Dump the pre cooked hash browns on the strainer, pre-heat my cast iron skillet with some butter dump them in and cook to the desired doneness.

Has anyone used the salad shredder to shred carrots for carrot cake.... is the shredding fine enough for cakes?

I have used the salad shooter to shred carrots for carrot cakes for years. I usually put the carrots through twice to get an extra fine shredding.

does it shread cabbage good?

I haven't tried cabbage, but the user manual says it does work with cabbage http://www.gopresto.com/downloads/instructions/02910.pdf
