Would i be able to cut the lid to use an external pump?

Probably, as it's thin gauge metal. But it would alter it's performance regarding noise levels. Also an external filter could be far too powerful for a five gallon tank. Small internal uplift spong filter does the job.

Can you fully remove the lid so suitable for a turtle? Could i fit a light clip to the lip of the top of the tank with lid removed
