The Columbus Hamburg 16 Inch Illuminated Desktop Globe thrills with its elegant style. The sophisticated design of the stainless steel base is a tasteful complement to the blue ocean globe. The sphere itself measuring 16 inches in diameter is held 20 inches tall on its stand. The semi-meridian which frames the desktop globe features a time dial at the apex of the Columbus globe. The Hamburg features two maps in one with the DUORAMA technology. A bold and colorful physical map graces the world globe's surface when it is not illuminated. The planet's natural colors shine with the greens yellows and blues from the earth's oceans and continents. Flip on the model's light switch and watch as a political map emerges colorfully on its surface. The boundaries between nations and abundance of place names become visible with light. The 16 inch Columbus globe was hand assembled. The skilled craftspeople that work at the German manufacturer's headquarters cut and glue each map gore to the model's acrylic surface by hand. This meticulous and time intensive process is what makes the Columbus globes special. Each handcrafted beauty shines with its artisanal qualities. The Columbus Hamburg 16 Inch Illuminated Desktop Globe is a memorable tabletop model from the designer's esteemed line. Whether intended for a desk bookshelf or coffee table this world globe is sure to delight wherever it's displayed in the home or office.

Magnificent globe, and as a Duorama, gives you two in one
A spectacular globe. The "Duorama" model basically gives you two globes in one: interior illumination off, you get a magnificent, detailed view of physical characteristics (ocean trenches, mountain ranges, etc.); interior illumination on, and the political features are displayed in discreet, subtle colors. Columbus also offers a "Duo" line, which is the reverse: illumination off displays political features, while physical aspects emerge when the interior light is turned on. We preferred the former, but it was a close call.

I truly love this globe
I truly love this globe. Two years ago, I set out to buy a globe. This inculded going to a "map" store in downtown Seattle where they displayed a couple of dozen globes. In the process, I discovered the Columbus brand made in Germany. Columbus is also one of the more expensive brands, you will pay 2 times as much as cheaper globes. Although to go cheaper, you probably can only buy at most a 14 inch globe rather than this 16 inch one. So you have to decide if the extra quality is worth it. To me it is:1) 16 inch is a big globe, but once I got use to it I wouldn't want a smaller one.2) The printing and finish are beautiful - it may not be a work of art, but it is very arractive and attention getting3) Showing the topography is great, gives one the send of looking down at the world as it really appears.4) The dou-layers are cool5) No big equator line as seen on most globes, which I think is an eye sore.So if money isn't a concern and you love maps and globes, I think you will be as delighted as I am.
