Can the umbrella's height be adjusted?

no umbrella height can not be adjusted, however , does tilt. very good buy.

what is the diameter of the pole?

I returned this product because the pole did but fit.

Would I need a separate base for this if I use it with a heavy wood patio table (with a hole) in order for it to stay upright?

i use my umbrella with a 36" wrought iron table. i put a med. high clay flower pot under the table ,then umbrella pole and use kitty litter to secure it. this works just fine. if you prefer you can use sand to secure it. the other issue is the hole in your table small, this umbrella pole is smaller around than reg poles. i did buy a item on amazon that adjusts hole size. in tables secures umbrella from turning.
