UPDATE: A new edition of this book is now available to order in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle formats. You can find it here: https://www.desertcart.com/dp/B0CLHBLSG2. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is an exciting new technology that was introduced in 2010. It targets applications in the Internet of Things (IoT) space. With the recent release of Bluetooth 5 in late 2016 and Bluetooth mesh in mid-2017 (which builds on top of BLE), Bluetooth is now more capable than ever of becoming the standard wireless protocol used in many IoT applications including: smart homes, smart cities, medical devices, wearables, and sensor connectivity. Learning a new technology is always challenging and usually comes with a learning curve. Some technologies are easier to learn than others. Unfortunately, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) can be one of those hard ones. The lack of good resources including blogs, tutorials, and up-to-date books that help a beginner to learn BLE, makes the task even more difficult. That is, in fact, the primary goal of this book: to provide you with a complete understanding of the basics and core concepts of BLE that you can learn in a single weekend . Here's a tiny list of the benefits this book will help you achieve: Understand what Bluetooth Low Energy is and how it compares to Bluetooth Classic. Become better informed about the use cases where BLE makes the most sense. Learn all about Bluetooth 5 and the new features it brought us. Understand how two BLE devices discover and connect with each other. Understand how BLE devices exchange and transfer data between each other. Fully grasp concepts such as Peripherals, Centrals, Advertising, Connections, GATT, GAP, and many others. Learn about the newly released Bluetooth mesh standard. What readers are saying โI bought your BLE book, and I love it. I am an iOS developer, and your material helped me understand some of the finer points of BLEโ -Alex Carrizo, Senior iOS Developer, iOS SME at Mobile Apps Company Topics include: The basics of Bluetooth Low Energy & Bluetooth 5.0. The difference between BLE and Bluetooth Classic (the one used for streaming audio and connecting headsets). The benefits and limitations of using BLE and which use cases make the most sense for BLE. The difference between a BLE Central and a BLE Peripheral. All about GATT (Generic Attribute Profile) and GAP (Generic Access Profile). How Bluetooth 5 achieves double the speed, four times the range, and eight times the advertising capacity.- How BLE devices advertise and discover each other. How two BLE devices connect to each other. How BLE devices exchange and transfer data between each other. Profiles, Services, and Characteristics. How secure BLE is, and how BLE devices secure the communication channel between them. The different connection and advertising parameters and what each of them means. An introduction to Bluetooth mesh. About the Author Mohammad Afaneh has been an embedded engineer for over 10 years. Since 2014, he has focused solely on learning and developing Bluetooth Low Energy applications. He even spent days and weeks reading through the 2,800+ page Bluetooth specification document looking for answers to questions he couldnโt find answers to in other books and resources. He shares everything he knows about development for BLE technology at his website www.novelbits.io, and via training classes around the world. Review: A must book to the BLE expert and enthusiastic - This book is comprehensive, well written and well organized. It is becoming now my #1 BLE Reference book, as it cover all aspects, with an excellent breadth and depth Each chapter covers the subject matter in an eloquent way, and provide links to external resources such as the Bluetooth SIG. Thank you for a much needed reference book. Review: It's a high level intro to BLE as title says - It's good intro. Know nothing of BLE, after this you've title level understanding. There's nothing wrong with book itself, it is literally introduction. Well written and composed. Already, know basic BLE or need to know deeper details. This book is waste of money. Just wanna know high level info, money well spent. Had I known (with intent to get to deeper details), would've bought something else. But still, pointing out as introduction to BLE ecosphere, the book will, get U there.

Clear and concise.
Very well written, not too technical while covering the basics thoroughly.

BLE 101
Written at the perfect level of detail for the book's intended audience and purpose. Some typographical errors (p34), use of acronyms before their definition (PDU), and references to colored parts of images/diagrams that are actually black and white (p61). These errors are minimal enough not to be a significant detraction. There is some repetition of content/concepts in different sections of the book, but I actually find this helpful to reinforce those concepts. The book is not too long and does not feel "padded" because of this. I wish there were more detail in 7.1.2 Coded PHY and much more detail in 7.2.2 Periodic Advertisements.

Comprehensive yet easy to read - a must reading guide for the novice and the veteran
Mr. Afaneh has the unique and quite rare combination of being smart and highly intelligent, with the ability to share and explain complex and abstract ideas and knowledge with others. I met him in a seminar and have followed him since then. I purchased his book, watched him on YouTube, and read some of his postings on LinkedIn. In my humble opinion he is one of the leaders and a true authority in for BLE. I am an engineer with many years of experience in wireless communication, but when in need, I turn to him. This book is very comprehensive and walks you from the high level concepts to a deeper level, of the intricate aspects of BLE. From the Physical layer to the practical Application part. I keep a copy of it on my bench, and many times it comes handy! The book is well organized, and allows browsing, as well as more methodic reading. It has a good "flow". I highly recommend this book for anyone who starts with BLE as well as to the advanced users. I look forward to more of Muhammad's books

Minimally useful compilation
This is a pamphlet that collates readily available information. It may be useful to a novice, but is a waste of money otherwise.

Brilliant little book on BLE
Great book. Well written. Concise and to the point. Must better than reading the Bluetooth spec. Higly recommended. Worth every cent.

"Friendship" in Bluetooth mesh
I'm an FPGA designer and firmware engineer with 20 years' experience. I've engaged in several corporate projects like Plasma display, LCD and communication chips. But I have little experience with wireless technologies like Bluetooth(BT) and BLE. To know more about BLE for starting out my own IoT project, I purchased this book and finished reading BT mesh and BT5 chapters. I think this book is a good introduction to BLE especially for BLE-beginners like me. It is a hard and daunting task for a novice to start from 2800+ pages specification. Because this book is well-organized and has many figures, it will help readers understand BLE. As a side note, the term in BT mesh "Friendship" between FN and LPN piqued my curiosity, since now is the trying time for everyone in the world.

Brilliant intro into BLE
Itโs rare I write reviews on Amazon, much less believe the ones I read. However, I can genuinely say of the 7 BLE books Iโve purchased so far in my quest to understand this topic, this is by far and a way the best. I particularly like the GATT design exercise. Itโs really well thought out with sufficient detail even down to the relevant UUIDs. If you are thinking of dabbling in BLE IoT then this book is a must buy.
