This is true, but it's sturdy, heavy duty plastic, nothing flimsy-feeling or lightweight. Full disclosure: I'm 6'1", ~200lbs, and I have severe lower back issues. Lower lumbar support is great. Chair height is actually appropriate when fully extended. This chair is WIDE.
