Review: A fun little pocket birdcall - These bird calls are awesome. I had one 30 years ago and lost it 25 years ago. I just bought another one and it sounds awesome. I've called in chickadees, swallows, owls, hawks, eagles, swans, zebras, lions, wildebeests, two giraffes, a polar bear, one anaconda and a yellow-bellied sap sucker. Make sure you dump a little of the pine rosin into the barrel and don't use too much pressure. A light touch is better.

A: You need to unscrew the end and remove the wood. You then need to rub some rosin (http://www.amazon.com/super I send it if sqq I guy/dp/B0002D0L40/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1388069894&sr=1-2&keywords=rosin) on to the metal shaft. Reassemble.

**Q: How to use it**
A: Just grab the wooden piece with the thumb and forefinger on one hand. Next grab the flat metal piece in the same manner with your other hand and twist the pieces back and forth while keeping the metal piece inserted into the hole in the wood. If it runs out of resin pull the metal part out and sprinkle more resin in the hole. Friction makes it squeak.

I'm really impressed by how bird-like the sound is from this little piece of wood rubbing against metal. It's amazing how easy it is to use with no instruction. I'm not sure yet if it will fool the housefinches on my deck, but it did immediately drive my wife nuts, so that could be good or bad depending on your intended use. Also in case you're wondering, the little pill pictured with it isn't just to show the scale: it's full of powdered pine rosin, which the package instructs you to sprinkle on to restore its sound if it ever loses it. I had one of these bird calls when I was a kid and used it for years without any added rosin, so I'm not sure how necessary that is. But it's a nice touch. This one feels just as sturdy and well made as the one I had years ago.
