How long does it last stored in the bottle?

I suspect years.  Betting the bottle gets saggy in five years after winter/summer expansion and contraction. Had a decades old glass bottle of it in the lab we still used.

Question 2

When mixed in distilled water, does it spread in the grooves of the record or bead up?

You only need to add about four or five drops of this to 32 oz of distilled water, 4 oz of 91% isopropyl achohol, and perhaps a little enzyme cleaner (solutions vary depending on who you talk to of course).  But yes, the whole purpose of using Triton X-100 is that it breaks the surface tension of water and makes it wetter than wet, meaning it will get down deep into the grooves of your records.

Look on YouTube for Bill's Box of Sound or DiscRewind for great videos on how best to clean vinyl records (the ones I watched were from about a year ago). Note that DiscRewind uses a Kodak surfactant instead of Triton X-100, but they are very similar.

Question 3

For cleaning records is the recommended amount the same as Tergitol, ie. 1ml per 32oz water?

My recipe for record cleaning is:

1 Gallon Distilled Water
32 oz 91% Alcohol
1 oz Triton X-100

Does it leave any residue?

Accepted Answer

Depends on what you are talking about. I use it to help clean vinyl records as it breaks the surface tension of water, allowing the water and cleaning mix I use to get down deep into the grooves. But I always follow that cleaning with distilled water to wash off any residue, then dry the records with microfiber towels, then put into a rack to air dry the rest of the way.  If you are using it for any other application, you'll have to seek advice from others.
