Peter & Paul Movie Review
I would highly recommend this movie for both personal viewing and for group study. It is remarkable how true to the Bible this movie is. Unlike other films (like "The Ten Commandments"), this movie does not exceedingly rely upon made up stories that have no Biblical basis whatsoever (although there is some of this and I will go into that a bit later). If you have your Bible handy and are familiar enough with the text, you can actually find substantial direct quotes throughout the film. The movie starts off with the early Christian Church under great distress as it faces opposition from the Jewish Leadership. The stoning of Stephen is the first Biblical event shown in the film and it does a good job of showing how the Apostles and leaders of the Church must have felt as they were enduring great persecution. The movie then goes on to cover much of the book of Acts and many of the events recounted in a number of the Epistles. Those who are familiar with the New Testament will immediately recognize many of the scenes in the film and will finally be able to get a true visual interpretation of what it may have looked like centuries ago.It should be noted, however, that the film-makers have taken some liberties in making this movie (although not as many as other films like "The Ten Commandments"). There are some portions of the film that have been added to explain the story of CHRIST (like the parts where Peter is recounting the the story of JESUS to Paul). Other portions have been added for dramatic effect (like where Peter witnesses the stoning of Stephen). A few really important events have been left out also (like the coming of the HOLY SPIRIT at Pentacost, or when Peter is shown that that which the LORD has made pure should not be called unclean). I also think that a few of the scenes have been twisted to due to time constraints and other reasons (like where Barsabbas & Silas deliver a letter from Jerusalem to Peter & Barnabas). Towards the end of the movie, the film-makers relied on Church tradition to recount what happened at the end of Peter & Paul's lives. Although the events shown at the conclusion of the film are not recorded in the Bible, the scenes are extremely powerful, very well told, and (in my view) very likely to have occurred as presented.Despite some failings, Peter & Paul is an absolutely terrific movie and is acted out by some magnificent actors. Anthony Hopkins plays Paul and does a fantastic job, especially when he's angry. An actor named Robert Foxworth plays Peter. Although I am not familiar with Foxworth's other works, he does a very good job acting as the fisherman from Galilee. This movie was made in 1981 for TV. As a result, it does not have the same kind of visual or audible appeal of modern films like "The Passion of the CHRIST". That doesn't mean that it looks or sounds bad though. However, it does mean that you should expect it to look like a quality movie that was made in the 80's. Also, the movie is a bit long for one sitting (it is 3 hours & 14 minutes long). I would suggest breaking it up into 2 sections (it was originally a 2-part TV mini-series after all)for regular viewing purposes. If you are planning on doing a Bible Study with the movie, I would suggest that you not watch for more than about 20 minutes before you stop for discussion and reading.I gave this movie 5 stars. However, if I were to grade it on a scale to 100, I would give it a 90/100. Although the movie isn't perfect, I would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to see the New Testament after CHRIST's resurrection put to film. If you are showing it to some who are unfamiliar with the the Biblical text, I would suggest that you make them aware that there are a few things that are different from the actual events. I have led a number of Youth Bible Studies (Middle School & High School aged kids) with this movie. They have seemed to be able to relate to the characters in the film a little easier than simply reading the Bible alone. If you are planning on doing a study with this movie, I would recommend that you find those sections of the Bible that are directly or near-directly quoted in the film. It is really quite powerful when you are able to read something from the Bible and then hear & see it on the screen.

Fantastic depiction of Paul by Anthony Hopkins
I don't remember seeing Anthony Hopkins in this type of role before or since. From my study of the personality of the Apostle Paul, Hopkins is a perfect cast for Paul. He (Paul) was a well educated Jew in the teaching of the world as well as the scriptures and Jewish traditions and laws, and a tenacious defender of both. His own struggles with these teachings were governed by his personal desire to do what was right. This made him an excellent candidate for conversion to the new Christian movement, especially after his personal encounter with Christ on the way to Damascus. He became a changed man, maintaining his strong proactive drive, now for a different cause.Hopkins does an excellent job at portraying these traits and the changes that came into Paul's life and which molded his motivations. He displays Paul's characteristics almost too exuberantly on first impression; but one comes to realize quickly that, for Paul to have accomplished all that he did during his life, he was most likely very much like the apostle depicted in this video.I was also pleased to see that the film follows very accurately the biblical accounts of Paul as well as the depicted conflicts among the early leaders of the church as they attempted to proselyte the gospel, not only to the Jews, but also the "gentiles' throughout the Mediterranean region. One will obtain a great appreciation and admiration for Paul through this film, as well as a greater understanding of the early church as the brethren attempted to maintain truth, doctrine, organization and order without the help of cellphones, e-mail, and speedy transportation!

The Crucifixion of Christ Was Just the Beginning
I saw this mini series years ago and absolutely fell in love with it. I don’t recall it ever being rerun on TV and just assumed I wouldn’t see it again. My daughters suggested to try to find it on Amazon and luckily there was one left. This movie is basically about the early beginnings of Christianity-how there were persecutions by both the Jewish ruling class; (the same who sought the death of Jesus) and the Pagan Gentile people. The portrayal of Paul by Anthony Hopkins was powerful and flawless! The actor who played the Emperor Nero was spine chilling, and really deserved recognition! Excellent movie to learn how Peter and Paul brought Christianity to the Western world.

Disappointed
I watched this as part of Bible study because I like to have a audio- visual aid but this interpretation leaves a lot to be desired. I was disappointed that so much scripture was left out and that truly represented Paul's mission to bring the gospel to the gentiles. Deceptive.

A slow-paced, long, but thorough and comprehensive movie!
Anthony Hopkins does a good job acting as Paul, but this is a slow-paced, long, but thorough and comprehensive movie. It is a movie that is best viewed for older adolescents and adults who have patience in order to fully appreciate and learn from the movie. It is available with a Spanish soundtrack and English subtitles, but hopefully when it gets re-released next time, they will include French and Spanish subtitles, and a conversion to wide-screen format,
