Symbols and Allegories in Art (A Guide to Imagery)

Informative book on symbols and allegories in art. I really enjoyed the content and the explanations offered. I only wish the size of the book was bigger and the font on some pages not so small. Other than that it’s excellent.

Really interesting and though provoking. A great guide for learing to better appreciate the exuberant paintings and artists. Too bad it is only available in small format. Otherwise, an awesome book!

came as expected, good book, very helpful for symbology

Tis a wonderful book to sit down and flip through. It's very informative, and the quality of the pages and prints are good. I just didn't like the size of it, but I can't cut the rating because I knew what I was buying. It's a nice little book to keep you engaged and has useful information. ​

Beautiful, informative little book!

As some earlier reviewers mentioned, this book has a unique organizational structure that makes it hard to look up a specific symbol or idea. There is an index, which helps somewhat. However this book isn't nearly as useful as it could be. There are four main sections - Time, Man, Space, and Allegories. Within these sections various symbols and ideas are presented in no particular order that I can see. Not exactly what I was hoping for but not useless.

I was hoping that it would be more encompassing, but it only covers European art. It's also not as interesting as I thought it was going be.

A small and compact guide to the use of symbols in art.Well set out and designed and of course profusely illustrated.The paintings are all quite small due to the size of the book itself but are clear and have lots of annotations to explain the various points.An interesting read that will enable you to actually look deeper into traditional paintings.

Love the simple, user friendly way that the methodology for explaining the symbolism on each page is laid out. Also, the book size makes it easy to take with you to galleries etc. Just what I wanted and hoped for.

This is exactly what you need, especially as a student studying Medieval and Renaissance art ............ full of great information.

This book is well produced and a good size, usually these books are cumbersome and over large for visits to gallery's and such like. Not given 5 stars as I feel that the book doesn't give as much detail as could, feels a bit lazy in its repetitiveness,.
