I would suggest you order them with a 36" waist they do stretch I tried both the 38" and 36" waist and prefer the 36" hope this helps

I am a 36 and large was too big for me so I sent them back and got medium which fits fine. Little or no shrinkage. Hard sometime to figure out what size when it is asian. I had to bur 3x in another brand.
