Must it end?
I have been a huge fan of the Nigthrunner series since I found it many years ago. This is the last (seventh) book in the series according to the author. I’m really sad to see it end, but can understand that if she is out of stories for these characters, best to end on a good note. She has said short stories are probable, which is good. And it was nice to see nothing “final” happened to them, there is always the possibility for more. The story was good. Solid magical mystery, good world building, really great secondary character development. After seven books, Alec and Seregil are well developed. It was awesome seeing them together, just like a normal couple, dealing with the situation. No time spent on second guessing their relationship. And neither one was captured or lost, causing the other to search for him for most of the book. Which is a good plot, but we’ve seen it a lot in this series.Instead the secondary characters got good development. Good pacing, good use of multiple POVs to tell the tale. Good use of aspects of previous tales to build the story. Just wish I had another novel to preorder.

Great at least temporary ending for a wonderful series
I only discovered the Nightrunner series three years ago. I immediately read (and loved) every book Ms Flewelling has published, but confess the Nightrunner books have been my favorites. This story offers a new locale, and introduces a lot of interactions with ghosts, demons and other supernatural beings, as well as some magical creatures with which readers of the series will be familiar. It of course focuses on our "old favorites" from the earlier books - Seregil, Alec, Mikum and Thero, but also brings Thero's new apprentice, Mika, to vivid and engaging life, and shows us Thero and Klia's relationship, which began in previous stories, but was never particularly pertinent to the plot. The ending was also very satisfying - enough threads left open for potential future tales, should Ms. Flewelling decide to write them, but enough closed to satisfy even this die-hard Seregil and Alec fan.I also loved how the mystery at the beginning of the tale is so strange that no one can explain what's happening. Various supernatural (vs magical) possibilities loom and create a nice air of creepy mystery. As the plot progresses and the mystery begins to unravel, perfectly valid reasons for much of the mystery are found, but never spoil the plot. Nicely handled.Definitely a recommended read. Though you can read it as a stand-alone, you'll enjoy it much more if you've read at least a couple of the earlier Nightrunner books because of the added character development and depth that "history" will give you.Long live the queen's Nightrunners!

"Hello, mine."
I love this entire Nightrunner series - so, am a bit slanted in my reading. This covers a lot of new territory while bringing round all the familiar cast. Well worth a read. A nice blend of action, magic, sass, and sappiness. I think the real winner for me in all of the series (but brought nicely to a head on p. 392 in the paperback), is that the two central male heroes and lovers are simply a part of the world around them. The story is always at the forefront. The moments taken for a bit of softness or reassurance, or, on this particular page, intimacy, are simply part of the bigger picture. Unlike much of fiction featuring gay characters, these two don't live in a spotlighted vacuum. The world doesn't revolve around them, nor does the story serve as an excuse to dole out soft porn. It's a flesh and blood story. Flewelling is masterful at laying out and staying true to her world. And that means a lot to me as a reader. [Edited add-on some afterthoughts.]: There were some details that stuck with me that I wanted to follow-up on. At one point, while looking at cave paintings a detail of a missing finger in the imprints caught my attention. It was a nice dimensional detail and I knew I'd read something like it about caves in France (Grotte de Gargas). I also like how nimbly the writing can change and hold different characters perspectives. The voice of each character is distinct - and as soon as you are seeing through Alec, Seregil, or even young Mika's eyes - you know it. The tone of the story stays consistent, but that person's voice shines through.

A beautiful and haunting finale
I love Lynn Flewelling and this is a perfect ending to a long running story. I will admit that the Tamir Trilogy is my preferred series and I have gone warm-and-cold with Alex and Seregil: they sometimes seemed a bit like lovesick puppies to me. And then out pops this fantastic finale, and I realize that they were well under my skin without me even realizing it - I will miss them. I loved that in this book their personalities and relationship have really deepened and matured. You can see the toll that all their trials have taken on them. The last two books in this series have had great plotlines that would appeal to many readers, even if they weren't already fans. This book in particular had a spooky, sad mystery that was fascinating to explore. Almost a classic ghost story, it then unfolds into a deeper and more dire struggle that causes the characters to come full circle to the root of all their struggles. It makes me wonder if the author had it planned all along! It wouldn't surprise me, since her stories are so very cohesive. And of course, her writing style remains as stunningly descriptive and hauntingly beautiful as always.

Out with a bang!
With this novel, the author has delivered a very strong adventure to end the Nightrunner series. Our heroes are facing a terrifying enemy and there is excitement, terror, mystery & bravery aplenty. In this outing (the seventh) the story is just as strong as the earlier books in the series (I felt it took a definite dip around books 4 & 5).I've withheld a star because, I was disappointed with what I felt was something of a "luke-warm" interaction between Seregil & Alec. The passionate emotions that have developed between them over the series just didn't come across forcefully enough for my liking. If by any chance your reading this review never having read any of the series - then buy them all and enjoy a real treat in fantasy adventure writing. I've enjoyed reading these books many times over the years and I give my thanks to the author.

Brilliant book!
This is the last in a fantastic series of my favourite characters Seregil and Alec. So very sad that Lynn has called time on this series. I adore her characters, she is a brilliant author who weaves a magic spell with her characterization and plot twists, I go back to her books time and again. I look forward to reading whatever she writes in the future.

Nice ending to the series
Nice ending to the series, although I hope more will come in the future. This book is up to the standard of the series.
