Takashi Natsume has always been aware of the supernatural world, but after he inherits a magical book from his grandmother, the supernatural world is aware of him! Takashi Natsume can see the spirits and demons that hide from the rest of humanity. He has always been set apart from other people because of his gift, drifting from relative to relative, never fitting in. Now he's a troubled high school student who has come to live in the small town where his grandmother grew up. And there he discovers that he has inherited more than just the Sight from the mysterious Reiko. When Reiko was Takashi's age, she bound the names of demons and spirits in her Book of Friends , enslaving them to her capricious whim. Now Takashi is the owner of the book, and the creatures will do anything to get their names back. Review: Fantastic story, beautiful frames - I think if you enjoy anime like Hunter x Hunter, where the focus is more on friendship than anything else, with subplots of conflict and combat, this is a good manga for you! There is less physical combat and more spiritual/emotional in Natsume, but you get progressively more invested in Natsume and the nyanko cat as the story continues. I've read books 1-3 and each has been better than the last. It's not really romantic at all but you get sucked into character's lives in a similar way. The art is also beautiful, and there are frequently "cute" frames of Natsume...which shows the reader a different side of him. Review: Wonderful Series - NOT NECESSARILY A SPOILER BUT JUST IN CASE A WARNING: Iโve never once given a review but I felt I must for this series. Iโm so touched by all of the stories of the yokai and of Natsumeโs kind nature. I can find myself relating to his thoughts and feelings about not wanting to deal with things that can trouble you in daily life but starting to get along with it. I think this is a wonderful series to read and start with if you are just getting into manga as well.

Beautifully drawn
I love Japanese folklore and this series has lots of stories about various Japanese spirits (Ayakashi). I was kind of surprised that the chapters are all stand alone-ish. I think the series has over 10 books so I wonder if that changes.

One of my favorite manga
I love this story. I couldn't help but get emotionally invested in Natsume Takashi and his guardian of sorts, Madara/Nyanko-sensei. Natsume is a lonely, orphaned teen with delicate health who inherited the ability to see and interact with yokai from his grandmother, Natsume Reiko. Because of this he's been shuffled from home to home and ostracized by his peers for being weird. He has also inherited a book with the names of various yokai. His ability and the book have yokai constantly drawn to him causing him both trouble and joy. I would recommend this for someone who enjoys the supernatural genre.

The Anime did a good job with this.
I bought the manga after watching a few seasons of the anime (which I high recommend). It is pretty close to the same but there seems to be more content in the anime (at least per episode). The feeling is very much the same and so are the story elements. Natsume is a very kind person in spite of his troubled childhood and I think this story captures that natural empathy we have as people (and yokai).

Get ready for some spirits, meow!
A fantastic manga with themes of spirits and gods. The main character Natsume is an orphan, who stumbles upon his Grandmother's old book. In it she wrote the names of fooled and bested spirits, the good, the bad and the ugly. Natsume decides to give these spirits their names back, because he's such a nice boy. Along the way he meets Madara, who looks like a lucky cat but turns out to be a demon spirit. Very much like Ryuk from Death Note, you sense he is keeping Natsume company, and helping him only until he can get his hands on the book. He wants the book for himself because it has the ability to control the spirits with their names bound within. Natsume, however, just wants to undo the damage his Grandmother caused and release the names, albeit at great personal risk. Volume 1 is a fine introduction to the plot and main characters. I think this is going to be a "spirit of the chapter" kind of manga. Meaning that, save for story arcs, we are going to consistently see a pattern of events involving the book. It's a tried and tested formula, and if it ain't broke then don't fix it. I'm more interested in the cat spirit, Nyanko-Sensei as he becomes known, Madara by any other name, but I'm hoping for some more characters and perhaps a little more gusto from Natsume as things progress. The artwork is beautiful, like pencil drawings. ^^
