This cookbook companion to the New York Times bestseller Wheat Belly serves up 150 great tasting wheat-free recipes to help readers lose weight and beat disease. Wheat Belly shook the foundations of the diet world when author and renowned cardiologist William Davis revealed that an epidemic of adverse health effects-ranging from minor rashes and high blood sugar to the buildup of stubborn belly fat (so-called "wheat bellies")-could be banished forever with one simple step: Saying goodbye to wheat. The Wheat Belly Cookbook takes readers to the next level with over 150 fresh and delicious wheatless recipes, including Breakfast Quesadillas, Braised Pot Roast with Vegetables, velvety Peanut Butter Pie—and surprising wheat-free hits like Blueberry French Toast, Bruschetta Chicken on Angel Hair, Spaghetti Bolognese and velvety Scones. Additionally, readers will also learn how to: - Dodge symptoms of "wheat withdrawal" experienced by about 10 percent of dieters, ensuring a smooth transition to this new healthy eating plan - Set up their wheat-free kitchen, including important prep techniques, shopping lists, and strategies to get the whole family on board - Avoid regaining a wheat belly while eating out at restaurants and parties—plus exciting meal ideas guests will love Review: Emmer and einkorn are more like the original wheat - I have been using this cookbook A LOT! Emmer and einkorn are more like the original wheat
I have been using this cookbook A LOT! Also appreciate his explanations which tell WHY our modern wheat is so hard on us (and if it is hard on us, it is hard on our pets as well). 48 chromosomes in diploid order (3 strands). More than recipes, excellent recap of reasons to avoid wheat:.Here's the rundown on the recipes and more.
You don't need to have read the author's other books, including Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health or Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight! to get up to speed on the whole "lose the wheat" system. All the general info is here. It can be summed up, as the author does, very simply: "Wheat is not to be trusted" and in even more blunt terms, he calls it "the Enron of the food world." Dr. William Davis adds that whole grains (which are considered healthy by many ) can contribute to high blood pressure and cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome - even depression. Of course, the author goes far beyond this bare bones summary in the book. The Wheat Berry Cookbook is divided into two parts, along with a detailed introduction. Part I focuses on The Wheat Belly Way of eating. Part 2 centers on recipes as well as some very intriguing success stories, complete with photos of the people who share their experiences. I was fascinated by these personal accounts. Now for the recipes: Examples of breakfast choices include french toast, pancakes, frittatas, homemade turkey sausage, breakfast egg biscuits, etc. Main dish lunch and dinner selections favor plenty of traditional fare: Braised Pot Roast with Vegetables (using coconut flour as a thickener for the gravy), Pecan-breaded pork chops, Herbed Chicken, etc. Many are family-friendly but if you like to branch out from the usual fare you can try other choices such as the Feta Spinach Swordfish. The No-Macaroni and Cheese is a winner, with cauliflower serving as a stand-in for the pasta. No, it doesn't taste like "regular" Macaroni and Cheese but I like it better. If you're cautious about your fat intake, I should mention that even some of the lower calorie recipes can have high fat amounts in them. One example is a creamed spinach which has only 235 calories but a whopping 18 grams of fat. Spaghetti squash is a favorite of mine and the recipe for Spaghetti Squash with Brown Butter and Sage has 172 calories - of which 12 grams (more than half the total calories) are fat. Since we had squash on hand, I tried this recipe - for breakfast yet- and was easily able to lower the amount of butter from a whopping 4 tablespoons to far less. The taste was still excellent and the sage was a wonderful addition. Bonus material includes the individual success stories noted above as well as a list of not-so-obvious foods which may contain wheat. There is also an appendix of resources for products, websites, and more wheat-free recipes. This information should simplify things for those new to the Wheat Belly Diet. References provide further reading material if you are interested in knowing more about the studies and statistics behind the info in this book. Bottom line? You are either going to buy into the information presented here or you aren't. Here's where I"m coming from: I've cut my use of wheat significantly and have definitely felt better with the lab results (lower cholesterol) and weight loss to support my conclusions. However, I am not yet wheat free. But close. I'm still a work in progress - nearly 40 pounds lighter and without the aches and pains I had from that extra weight. Are all my improvements due to less wheat? I honestly don't know. But it is possible. A caveat for those of you allergic to nut products: a fair amount of the recipes suggest ground almond flour, including a basic bread recipe which is used for other recipes such as French Toast. However, I've found that coconut and other flours can be substituted although you may have to play around with the proportions. If you are allergic to coconuts as well as almonds, etc...then you'll have to tweak things significantly for the bread recipes - at least, a fair amount of the time. If you're new to wheat-free eating, the author has lists of resources and even brand names for wheat substitutes: garbonzo and coconut flours, and more. He also lists foods which may be assumed to be wheat free but are not. .

Yum! Can't wait to dive in!
I just got this book today and I am super psyched to start cooking. The recipes look fabulous and filling. I tried the egg muffin - basically making an omelet in a muffin tin and baking in the oven to have on hand for easy breakfasts. I just started going wheat free and low carb 3 days ago. I also bought his book and am starting reading that too. The reason I have made this decision is because I had the roux-en-y gastric bypass weightloss surgery 10 years ago and am suffering from severe hypoglycemic reactions after eating barely any carbs. More and more information has been coming out about this problem for people who had this surgery. I have read where it has gotten so bad for some people that they have had their pancreas removed or even a feeding tube put in. I want to avoid that and so a willing to let go of my precious warm breads, cookies, and pastas. In 3 days I have noticed a huge difference in my blood sugars where they are so much mores stable. There really is no way I would stick to this eating style unless it really made a huge difference in my life. What excites me about his cookbook is that there are great recipes for bread, cookies, and even a no-macaroni n cheese. So I still get to enjoy the foods I love, just in a newer version. I am not trying this in order to loose weight, but am very hopeful that will be an added bonus. If you are trying out this eating style, get the cookbook. I have looked up recipes online, but his recipes seem to be even better.

Awesome lifestyle, so-so cookbook
I purchased the original Wheat Belly Diet book a couple of months ago and have been thrilled at the results. I've lost weight, my skin is much clearer and much of my joint pain is gone. The recipies in that book are quite good and, for people new to the wheat-free concepts, easy to follow. So I was looking forward to this supplemental cookbook for more dinner ideas. My family has been openly hostile to abandoning wheat and I wanted a bigger arsenal of tasty alternatives. This cookbook didn't deliver an arsenal. It's maybe a small cache. The "bakery" section is hands down the best part of the book. I have school-age kids and they liked the chocolate chip cookies and the gingerbread. The cheddar biscuits were quite good with chili. But some of the dinner and side dishes are just terrible. For example, I made the "fried" Parmesan chicken. After the first bite, my husband reached for his phone and ordered pizza for himself and the kids. I scraped off the coating and tried to just eat the meat. I couldn't finish it and made myself an omelette. And the" fried rice?" Awful. While shredded cauliflower makes a good rice substitute, this recipe was another "pizza order" night for the hubby and kids. So that's two dinners of wasted food and the cost of two pizzas on top. If you're doing Wheat Belly, Paleo, low-carb or gluten-free, this cookbook is great if you are missing quality baked goods. But if you are looking for main dishes, spend the cost of this book on grass-fed meat and fire up the grill instead.

★THE TRUTH BEHIND WHEAT ★ A MUST READ-PLUS A TON OF DELISCIOUS UNIQUE RECIPES ★
I Don't Usually Buy Cookbooks. Usually, I Just Read the Recipes on the Web or Read a Kindle Book and I'm Developed Hundreds of My Own Gluten Free Recipes and Converted Recipes to Gluten Free. The Only Reason I Purchased This Book Was Because of All The Hype I'd Heard About the Author and His Books. I Pretty Much Thought I Was an Authority on Gluten, Celiac Disease and the Problems with Wheat and Grains in the Diets of People, Even Those Without Allergies and Intolerances. There Couldn't Possibly Be Anything I'd Learn in This Book. The Author Proved Me Wrong. Nearly 3 1/2 Years Ago, When I Went Totally Wheat Free and Lost 102 Pounds (I Also Cut Out Processed Foods and Ate No More Than 3 to 4 Ounces of Meat a Day) I Was Able To Go Off Narcotic Pain Meds, Cut Diabetic Medication over 80%, Arthritis Medication, 1600 mg Neurontin Daily and Medication for GERD . I Was Taking So Much Medication, I Had to Wean Off It and Still Had Withdrawal Side Effects That Were Terrible. I Still Have Allergies, Because I'm Allergic to So Many Foods & Substances. But, Going Wheat Free and Cutting Out Corn and Most Grains Helped All My Other Problems Tremendously and Even Improved Most of My Allergies and COPD. At the Time I Went Wheat Free, Doctors had me on 27 Meds. I'm Now on 6 and That's Mainly for Allergies & Asthma and Blood Pressure (the Allergy Meds Kick That Up) Some Days My Blood Sugar is So Low, I Have to Go Without Any Medication. DIET IS MEDICINE. When I Read This Book, There Were a Lot of Things I Learned that I Didn't Know and So Many Good Recipes, I've Dog Eared About a Quarter of the Book. I Come Back to it Again & Again. Of All the Great Recipes, Probably My Favorite is the TURKEY SAUSAGE Recipe. You Make it With Ground Turkey and It's Fantastic. That One Recipe is Worth the Price of the Book. I Make It Almost Weekly and When My Store Has a Manger's Special on Ground Turkey Cheap, I Make Up a Bunch Of The Patties and Freeze Them. Then, I Like To Crumble One Up Sometimes in a Few Egg Whites with a Little Nutritional Yeast. It's Much Better Than It Sounds. Of Course, You Could Use Cheddar Cheese, Instead of The Nutritional Yeast or Omit it Entirely. I've Even Played Around With the Ingredients and Made a Version of Italian Sausage Out of that I Love on My Cauliflower/Zucchini Pizza Crust.. The Book is Full of Recipes You'll Go Back To Again and Again. Several Years Ago, I Thought I Had No Problems With Wheat. My Grandmother Had Celiac Disease, But I'd Been Tested For "Wheat" as Part of My Allergy Testing and it was Negative. It Wasn't Until a Few Years Later That an Immunologist Told Me That You Can STILL Be Allergic, Because You're Only Tested For 3 Allergens and There are 27 Allergens in Modern Wheat. You Only Get Tested For the Three. So, Do Not Assume that Because Your Allergy Tests Showed You Weren't Allergic That You're Free and Clear. I Thought it Was Odd That I Was allergic to Just About Every Kind of Tree, Every Kind of Grass, Corn, Every Other Kind of Grain I Was Tested For, But Not Wheat. Once I Abstained From Wheat, My Entire System Changed. Plus, this Author Has Included Helpful Sections That Are REALLY Helpful. He Even Included a Section on Where to Go on the Internet to Find Out if Your Meds Have Wheat In Them and I Found Out TWO Of Mine Had Wheat And One Had Guar Gum In It as a Binder That I'm Extremely Allergic To. I've Asked My Pharmacist Over And Over and Was Told There Was No Way Of Knowing the ADDED ingredients in the Medications (Binders, Etc.) But Apparently There Is. If You Buy and Read Just ONE BOOK on Celiac Disease or Wheat Sensitivity, This Should Be It. ★Thank You For Reading My Review.

Excellent overview of why wheat is so destructive. Educational.
Aside from the recipes, this book gives an excellent discussion of the history of wheat, why its desctructive to the human digestive system, and alternatives we can use when we eliminate it from our diet. Some people get so sick from consuming wheat that they must avoid it. Many of the rest of us have milder symptoms, but many people suffer from the effects of wheat. It's very interesting and not the same stuff as in his book Wheat Belly, which is also excellent. They're both great books. For anyone, it's a very healthful way of eating when you eliminate the wheat products; lots of sugar an processed food go away with it. If you have autoimmune issues or, really, any health issues (blood pressure, blood sugar, skin/joint problems, and others), check out this cookbook (more than just recipes!) and his other Wheat Belly books for info that will surprise (maybe scare??) you. His book Undoctored is also excellent--doctors can't fix everything, so it's really up to you to manage your health. Doctors manage sickness.

Great Book and Recipes
I also have Dr. Davis' original Wheat Belly book, but refer people to the Wheat Belly Cookbook when I'm encouraging them to learn about the pitfalls of eating wheat. The first part of the book has a great summary and case studies; it's a lot easier to read for most people than the original book. Then there are 150 recipes afterwards, too. The biggest help for me with the recipes was in terms of substitutes for baking (crusts, cakes, etc.). Otherwise, I'm very comfortable with creatively cooking vegetables, fish, etc. (I'm a foodie at heart). Does this way of eating work? Absolutely!!! I'm totally sold on it and it's really not hard to follow. Even eating out at restaurants. So many people are gluten-free and lots are jumping on the wheat belly bandwagon... that restaurants have gluten-free menus or don't think you're weird when you ask for substitutes. I have been following this way of eating for over a year and it is fabulous! My headaches have gone away, my skin has really improved, I've got tons of energy (I have a lot of energy any way, but this just added to it), and my last medical check up was terrific. I'm 63 years old and take no prescription meds .... unlike most everyone my age!

Very illuminating
I bought it for the recipes and was surprised to find a comprehensive explanation of wheats history. It only galvanized my resolve to never eat it again. The recipes are great, many offer good substitutes for our familiar wheat products if you so need to go there. It’s a good book for those who are still addicted to wheat and need to find a replacement while adjusting their diet. The withdrawal can actually be quite unpleasant, to mitigate the effects follow Dr. William Davis’ recipes for the L.reuteri yogurts in the Supergut book. It will change your life. It changed mine.

Great cook book to compliment the wheat belly diet.
This cook book gives a summary of the wheat belly book. It has recipes for all meals of the day and testimonies of people who have lost weight and a fast variety of health issues. I found them very encouraging especially in the beginning when I did not have much energy, to keep going. It is American and some recipe names, utenils and ingredients I have had to google as I did not know what they were. I purchased some meassuring cups as the recipes are all done in cups. This was new to me but I now find it much easier than using scales in fact my scales are collecting dust in a cupboard. I am not sure if this book is good for a complete novice but having said that the recipes are very easy to follow and am using recipes and adapting them easily and successfully. I found it tricky to get my head round using alternatives to wheat flower but once you start it is far less complicated than when you first read the recipe. There are some pictures in the book but if you are looking for a glossy cookery book this is not for you. If however you want to loose weight, have health isues and or have food intollerances in your family this is a great book! I lost 12 kg in under a month and still loosing between 1-3 kg per week. ( I did not start out to loose weight but it was a very welcome bonus!) My sweet tooth has disappeared which makes it the easiest diet to stick to as I have never been able to stick to diets thinking I had no will power, now I know differently! I gained enough energy and more to match my 3 pre-schoolers and many other health and life styleimprovements. In fact last week when I took my brood to the park they asked me if we could go home yet! Cannot recommend this book enough!
