Thoughts from a lifelong COD fan
Hereโs the thing: with Call of Duty (and basically any other game), not all fans will be completely happy. Some will welcome the changes a new game brings, while others might think it changed too much. I remember when people would hate on COD by saying it was the same game over and over again. I, for one, welcome the new changes in this years Modern Warfare. Let me first start off by talking about my favorite aspect of the game: the realism. The gameplay is slower, shooting is more gritty, and the audio sounds great. The graphics are also absolutely incredible, especially the lighting (night missions are a highlight) Campaign: the campaign is your typical cheesy COD, and its quite fun. There is a lot of mission variety, and the new (and old) characters are memorable. Multiplayer: because of the realism in the game, the way multiplayer is played is quite different this year. For one, there really isnโt much โrun and gunningโ anymore, but I welcome that. To me, that got boring quickly, playing the game with no strategy. Thereโs always been campers before, but so far they do seem very common. I donโt think thats a fault of the game, but rather of noobs. However, there are strategies that you can use to address this (theres equipments that help) but it requires learning something that hasnt been done before. the game has a lot of game modes, and the new ground war is a welcome suprise, ive always wanted a large-scale mode! spec ops: I havent really played much spec ops, but the missions Iโve played are cool. Definitely seems like its designed for playing with friends though, so lone wolfs may not like this mode as much. Iโm glad survival mode is back but dissapointed its exclusive to ps4 for a year. the operations seem the highlight of specs ops, but I havent been able to play them as my friends dont have the game yet. the post-launch support for this mode sounds great and Iโm excited to see what new operations and missions are added. all in all, I think this game is a great package. Iโve played COD since COD 3 when I was a kid, and I have to say this the best COD since black ops 2. Whether youโre a fan of the changes they made or not, I think its at least admirable that they tried so many new things

This ain't 2007. Thank god for that.
Here is the deal, if you have been waiting for a return to form for the CoD series, one that takes you back to the good ol' days of 2007, well this is likely as good as you are going to get. That said, it isn't, nor could it be, the same game. It had to be different. In over a decade, a helluva a lot has happened to the industry and the genre. What is the same? Gun play, selection of modern weapons and variants that makes it feel more grounded. And, of course, some of the killstreaks. What is different? Well, almost everything else. The way you play, the way you move, the way you can hide (camp--I often wonder if people that complained about camping got involved in real combat if they would scream across the battlefield at the poor bastard on the other side for hiding behind a car. Yeah, I know its a game but flank the guy if he is camping. Adjust and force him/her to move.), and the "weight" of your player makes movement more challenged but still fluid. For those that like to run and gun, you can still do so but, for a change, you are going to get punished for doing so all the time. You want to do better at the game? Slow. Down. The leveling system, perks system, and prestige system have all undergone severe changes that in my opinion help bring this franchise from the ash heap of FPS back to the forefront. These decisions are sure to divide some that want essentially a CoD 4:MW reskin but to them, I say, you already have it. It is called MW:Remastered. Go play it, it is as close as you can get to the original. So, forget your 360 degree bozo sniper shots or horribly unfair quick-scoping shots that turn sniper rifles into some sort of extended shotgun. Forget your ability to run through claymores and get a ridiculous knife or melee kill on your opposite, while, unsurprisingly, they throw their remote against the wall in rage. Forget your jackrabbit shooting or dolphin-diving. Forget your desire to be Neo and run on walls sideways. And forget being totally overwhelmed--though, as people get better at this new iteration that likely will change--by kill streaks that wreck your squad before you even get a chance to get going. In many ways, this was the next step that CoD should have taken years upon years ago. Thankfully, it is here now as we close out one console cycle and begin within the next year a new one. My hope is that those behind the game stay the course and do not give into the pressure to change back to the ludicrous tendencies of the past. Criticism: So, yeah, I like the game, but there are things that give me pause: 1. TTK is ridiculously fast. Don't get me wrong, I feel there are also times where you might survive an exchange. But more often than not, if you have them, they are dead. If they have you, you're dead. 2. Enemies blend into the muddy color scheme and environment of the game in a fashion that is both incredible and befuddling. In one sense, I like it. It is more realistic. But, for those that want more of an arcade-like experience, I get their concerns. 3. Draw distance and scope of the game, especially in Ground War, is quite large and it reminds me more of Battlefield than it does Call of Duty. And man, oh man, can people, including non-snipers, pick you off at questionable distances with all types of weapons. 4. I am not sure, right now, if much of a difference exists between SMGs and ARs. I have been running with a M4 and likely will do so until they tweak the meta. But, I have also been gunned down, at distance (see 3), by an SMG that should not have that great of accuracy in that situation.

Modern Warfare Sets a New Bar
After years of the same arcade style FPS, Call of Duty finally goes back to what made their multiplayer so successful, Modern Warfare. While bringing you back to one of the greatest eras of video games, the new Modern Warfare delivers a redesigned feel for how a FPS should play. Setting a new bar for shooter campaigns with a dark, gritty, and realistic story, you'll be hooked in from the second you start playing. The multiplayer feels fresh and redesigned, using a brand new engine that allows the game to stand out among its predecessors. The game feels satisfying to play. However, be warned; this isn't your typical run and gun Call of Duty. You have to incorporate realistic tactics in this game, don't complain about campers, just adapt. The Spec Ops continues the story from the single player with unique cooperative game modes that have cut scenes, intense gun fights, and only one difficulty; be warned, it's actually pretty challenging. You also have access to survival mode if you're on PS4. Overall, Modern Warfare delivers on every level. From someone who dominated on both COD4 and MW2, this new Call of Duty brings back memories of some of my favorite gaming days, while also reinventing itself to stand out as its own recognizable FPS, placing itself as potentially the best Call of Duty ever made.

I fully enjoyed the campaign.
Is it the best call of duty? no. Is it better than the last few call of duties? yes. Do I wish the campaign was longer? yes. I really did enjoy the single player campaign in this CoD. It only took about 6 hours to complete but it was gritty and gruesome, action packed and refreshing. It's not the best single player campaign i've ever played, but it is a step in the right direction. The guns feel amazing and movement is top notch. Voice acting was on point, it was a little too on rails in some points but not so much that made me hate the game. Multiplayer feels just as good. I'm digging all the different weapons and weapon attachments. This feels like a move towards the older Modern Warfare titles and I'm digging it. A lot of you diehard CoD fans, me included, need to take off the rose colored glasses and realize that we will probably never have the same feelings that Ghosts or MW2 or MW3 gave us. Those times are passed. Even when they released a Remastered version, which everyone moaned about wanting, nobody really played it. Nostalgia is more fun to remember than to relive. I see a lot of reviews giving 1 star because "YoU CanT PlAy ofFliNE!" ... this is the world we live in now. If you don't have access to an internet connection, how are you posting a review on amazon? If you are a fan of the Modern Warfare series from years ago, give this one a shot... it's not perfect, but its a step in the right direction.

Lots of Potential - But The Current State is Frustrating
First I will note that the campaign in this years COD is phenomenal. Easily one of the best in the history of COD and brings back memories of the first time I played the MW2 campaign back in the day. If that is the sole reason for purchasing the game and you are comfortable with spending $60 for a 4-6 hour campaign then you will enjoy yourself. Now to the multiplayer...I will preface that my COD experience stretches back to the days of Modern Warfare 2 and have played every edition of COD since with the exception to Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare. I will lead off with the good things. The guns feel incredible. Where last years Black Ops 4 guns felt like glorified super soakers or nerf foam dart guns, this year all the guns feel like they have some "punch". I don't quite know how to describe the exact difference but when you shoot its more of a bang then a "peew peew". The graphics and tone of the environment sets the bar very high for future shooters in this category of games. Everything is sharp the feeling of everything around you has that gritty old school call of duty feel to it as opposed to the more immature and cartoonish formula of recent Treyach COD titles. For those who prefer the gritty style of COD then this is a plus for you. Now the bad. Most of my criticisms are things that can be changed and should infinity ward release a patch that makes these changes then my review would also change. You die WAYYYYYYY to fast this year. Because you die so fast you are at a MASSIVE disadvantage turning a corner without explicit knowledge about where the enemy is around the corner. This along with other reasons totally strips any incentive to activity move around the map when you are much safer and will do better if you fortify your position with a couple claymore mines and lay in wait aiming at a popular area for people to traverse. Or in COD jargon, "camping". This behavior is the worst of any COD title I have played since Modern Warfare 2 and is incredibly frustrating. The other aspect of the game that makes this "camping" problem so pernicious is the map design. The maps, while very visually appealing and immersive, cater to this camping behavior by placing good locations to do so with perfect sight lines to your spawn area or are incredibly difficult to get into and hopefully root out that camper who has been sitting in that one room with a shotgun for the entire game working towards a high kill streak. The maps also pose multitudes of scenarios where you would like to round a corner or cross a street but if you do so you will find that there are so many angles that you could get shot at from that it is often bordering on impossible to guess the right one and hopefully get the kill on the enemy waiting in one of the 6 windows for you to come out from cover. Mix that with the very fast time to kill even at long range and if you are unlucky to have secured a good camping spot for yourself at the start of the game, you have a very unenjoyable experience. The map design is one thing that will be very difficult for them to change as its tied directly into the foundational geometry they built the map on so I imagine this problem is there to stay. I gave the game 3 stars because the campaign is top notch but also because I think the game has potential. My personal opinion is that the time to kill (how fast it is to kill an enemy) needs to be closer to black ops 4 especially with the problems of the map design. Certain guns need to be tuned as the double barrel shotgun can one shot you from the next zip code and the M4 simply cannot be allowed to be the best rifle option at short range, medium range, and long range. I enjoyed the game at first but very quickly became painfully aware of these issues that while few in number have a massive impact on your enjoyment of the game. I will be returning it while I can and wait to see if they make any changes to these issues or if this is the formula that they want and will stick to.

It's the best but most difficult Call of Duty I've played..
Let me explain; I got this on release day like I usually do for most FPS I'm excited for. I have no regrets about my purchase because I've played my entire weekend away on it. If this game was as bad as everyone else leaving 1-star reviews is saying, I would have quit and returned to my CODWW2 disc. It has room for improvement, and as they have done with all of the games in their series, it will be patched for the better. I mainly play multiplayer, but have played approximately 1 hour of campaign mode and have to say that the single player mode is the best I've experienced in the series. Graphics: The good: This is the first and most important feature I noticed going into CODMW. They are stunning! I'm playing on a standard PS4, so I'm sure the Pro on a UHD in 4k would be out of this world! The lighting is good, and characters don't "stand out" as much as they did in previous versions of COD. Which is great if you like to hide in a dark spot. Everything is smooth, and all of the visual effects are pretty realistic. The bad: The only graphic complaint I have is that you cannot set the field of view. I usually like to really crank the FOV up so I don't have to have my character look side-to-side all the time. Audio: The game has a great soundtrack that fits the theme on this one. Playing on a surround sound system with a subwoofer is great! The guns pack punches, the explosions are realistic. Controls: As with any new FPS, I have to dig into the options first to dial-in my sensitivity on the joysticks among other options. CODMW was no different. It took a good 5 matches to get things tuned right, but they do feel good. The bad: My only complaint I have is the side strafing seems slower than CODWW2 that I'm used to. Maybe it's just me? Gameplay: Playing just about any mode is fun, but sometimes gets pretty frustrating because of the vast difference in matchmaking skills and firepower strengths. Now there are doors everywhere. You can rush through them, but if you're quietly trying to creep you have to hold a button to open them. It's the same button that reloads your weapon or picks up items. Just seems a bit cumbersome at times. . You won't get instantly spawn-killed much in this game, but it will respawn you fairly close to another enemy a lot of the time, and most spawn points require you to do a lot of running to get to the hotspots of the map. I've only made rank 32 so far, and still have yet to get a gun or attachment that gives me much of a quickdraw feel. Aiming down the sight on just about every gun is so delayed and frustrating. Hoping this improves as I rank up, or in an update. Killstreaks: The killstreaks are hit or miss for me. The lower end (easier to get ones) are about worthless for me. Even some of the better ones like Wheel Son don't seem to be very effective. Then there's the chopper gunner; it reminds me of the ball turret gunner on codww2 but on steroids. If this thing is in the air it's game over. I've gotten it once organically, and once in a care package. Lots of fun to be the chopper.. not so much for the enemy on the ground. Weapons: There's quite a few to choose from, and TONS of attachments! Crossplay: While it may seem a bit unfair that a PC player can have an advantage with a keyboard and mouse setup vs. someone on a PS4, my experiences so far have been that I still get my rear end handed to me by PS4 players just as much. The lobby does tell you what platform the other players are on. You can disable crossplay for certain game modes, but some require it to be enabled. Overall they did a great job on the game, but just need to make some tweaks. It's more of a BF4 than a call of duty game in my opinion. If they could implement a rank-matching system that would put low-rank people together, and people that rank higher together, it would be less discouraging. Even playing the game on release day had a high ranking player finishing the match with 30-3 and the second place low-ranking player at 12-8. At that point there's really only one person having fun in that match. I'll update this review as I notice changes.
