A Throughly Enjoyable Fantasy
Reading all the negative reviews this movie got, I was a litte shy of paying a rental to watch it. What a surprise! I found this movie to be a throughly enjoyable fantasy! I am not familiar with either the book or animated series, but that certainly did not keep me from enjoying this movie. No one should have expected that the producers would have been able to include all the characters, events and details that go into a multiple book story arc, or a 30 episode animated series, into one movie that is only about an hour and a half long! Anybody remember the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy? Lots of characters were cut out, events were changed, liberties were taken with the story, and all of it did not keep The Lord of the Rings from being one of the best movies of all time. The Last Airbender has great characters, wonderful special effects and a good fantasy story. The story is a basic quest: the young Airbender, living a happy and peaceful life in a isolated temple is presented with the news that he is to be the new Avatar, the ruler of all the clans in this world, ultimate Master of all four Elements, speaker to spirits--a god in all but name! Since he is just a little boy, he is frightened by all this, and runs away. Unfortunately, a cruel fate interferes, and he is trapped in ice, frozen but alive, for 100 years. In his absence, the powerful Fire clan decides to conquer the clans and all its people. When the young Airbender is revived he finds that his single bad decision has had terrible consequences: His entire clan has been murdered, the Fire Clan has declared war on the world, they have destroyed all the temples, and murdered or imprisioned all people capable of Element Bending. The young Avatar now embarks on an epic journey to harness his powers, free the other Element Benders, promote rebellion in the conquered lands, restore balance to the world and realize his destiny. In this movie, the Element Benders must perform a kind of ritual dance that is part fighting arts, part tai chi, and part ballet, in order to conjure forth their powers, to harness, direct and use them. I did not find anything wrong with that. In fact, I found it beautiful and graceful. It gave the idea that the powers of an Element Bender had to be drawn forth and manipulated with great care, effort and training. It requires dicipline of mind and body, with a spirtual element taken into consideration as well. It isn't like an X-Men spin off, where you point a finger, or wiggle your eyebrows, and blow up buildings. The special effects are well worth seeing, worth the price of the movie by themselves. And the fighting arts dances of the characters are beautiful. The characters are good and enjoyable to watch. The acting is fine. You have a basic story that is easy to follow and to enjoy. The only thing you should be aware of, if you are like me and not familar with the story, is that the ending does not finish the story. It is a pause in the story telling---rather like watching the first movie in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But the ending is still a good one: the hero has begun to realize his true powers, the good guys win and the bad guys are in retreat. Of course, that is not the end of the story, not by a long shot! Unfortunately, I do not think that any more movies will follow this one, to finish it. Which is a great shame, as far as I am concerned. What is good is that it may cause more people to check out the book series. But the movie was lovely and entirely enjoyable. If you are looking for a good fantasy movie to watch, this is it.

Yes, it was terrible... watch it anyway!
Before I bash this movie with a metal-encrusted Toph (and I will) there are some things that really ought to be pointed out, by an adult fan of the actual TV show.Number 1.THE CREATORS OF THE SHOW ARE AMONG THE PRODUCERS OF THE LAST AIRBENDER. You can see it on the case, you can see it in the credits. They were very much involved in the decision to let 'Shame-a-lan' handle the writing for this movie. Yes, it was a mistake. But they were there. M. Night did not slip this under the original creators somehow.Number 2.THIS HAS 3D APPA AND 3D MOMO IN IT!! And they are wonderful. Seeing those two things alone made it worth my twenty dollars. I loved them!Number 3.THE EFFECTS WERE NOT 'BAD'. They were simply inappropriately used for what they should have been trying to accomplish. But again, the creators were there. They could have stopped this, and they did not.Number 4.THIS IS JUST A MOVIE. Yes, I know that is very disappointing! I love the show, and I know that it is more than just a show, and we all would have hoped this would be more than just a movie, which it is not. But let's face it guys, it's just mediocre. It didn't make you cry blood, it didn't make worlds end.--------That all being said... BASH THIS MOVIE WITH METAL-ENCASED TOPH.Did the filmmakers EVER watch the show? Who the hell are Ung, Soak-uh, and ee-row. It was AAng SOKKa and I-roh.Avatar: The Last Airbender was not really an action show. It was more of a fantasy-drama hybrid. It was enchanting and heartwarming... and in terms of that, this movie is just stupid. Sokka is only passively funny, he will not make you laugh out loud like he does in the show. Aang (Or 'Ung' as some apparently prefer) has no energy whatsoever and doesn't even ride around on his little bubble things. Zuko's scar looks like stretch marks -- it is far from the 'who's bad?' disfiguring ear-growth-stunting thing across his face that was in the show, and you can't feel nearly as bad for him and you just kind of don't care about him. He is just kind of a bad guy who seems like he will always be a bad guy -- static and closed minded. Which is not how he was in the show at all, he was very doubtful and torn, and quite frankly, really interesting, even when he was still being evil and whiny. The Firelord was not some pompous doughboy looking guy either, he was buff and aggressive and the anime equivalent of 'sexy', for lack of a better term. In this movie he is also lame. Azula is still fun, but you only see her for about two seconds at a time.Better watch out for that 'Acne Key', it's gonna getcha!Shame-a-lan should not have written this. He SUCKED SO MUCH. If the writing had been done well, this would have been an amazing movie. His actual directing was really not so bad, as some people are having fun saying. His writing is what sucked, and someone should have stopped him. But they didn't! We just have to accept that.Yes, it sucked. It sucked it sucked it sucked. TOPH SMASH!!But... you have to own it. You just do. It's The Last Airbender. Just shut up and watch it! Pretend M. Night Shamedusall isn't there, and just watch it.
