How does this detect what protocol is being used on the can bus? all i see is a volt meter built into a simple breakout box?

You have to use a lab scope to see anything regarding can bus. Here is a video from snap on tools thhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhX11X5ihws at may help you. If your using a volt meter all you will see is average voltage.

Just looked at the obdII protocol detector & breakout box. Looks like the two are basically the same thing. I would say the otc piece is probably a little better quality piece, of course it costs a little more money. But the two will function pretty much the same way.
